returning to Barricelli's Numerical Testing of Evolution Theories(1961) after not managing to continue it last semester.
just added a raster spacetime view next to the scrolling text view in SuperCollider, still in the phase of building ways to observe it, thought it feels slightly more legible now...
But even as it diffuses, objects always withdraw from any relation that tries to grasp them, as something in the water withdraws from the whole event. Withdraws from experience itself.
Reading Tim Ingold's <The Fountain>. He argues water and sound are the same diffusion event experienced differently: the hiss and tinkle in your ears, the wetness on your fingers, the sparkle in your eyes. Water doesn't exist prior to experience as a fixed thing. It emerges in encounter.
You build a diffusion machine, it exceeds your intention, you merge with it in listening, it withdraws anyway.

... the continuous/discrete properties of sound, (whether it reads as pitch or rhythm), comes from the ratio of these two timescales. ( macro-slips/mm => lfo; within each slip, hundreds of micro-cracks propagate to the tape's edge, firing a discrete pressure pulse )...
