The Journal Impact Factor started rising 📈 faster around 2004.
What happened in 2004❓
Online databases and open access publishing 🔓 made it easier to find relevant articles and cite them.
An overall rise in the citation parameters used in the metrics of scientific publications (i.e. journal impact factor, JIF) has taken place since the last decade of the previous century, coinciding with the electronic distribution of (and access to) scientific literature. This inflation like tendency is herein analyzed in the area of Materials Science and also affects the number of publications. Considering average JIF values, its growth is proportional to the number of publications in the area and to its JIF value, leading to an inhomogeneous boost that preferentially benefits those journals with high JIF. An elevation in the number of publications per year alone cannot explain this behavior but it occurs due to a continuous and widespread increment in the number of citations per article, which only remains limited when restrictions are applied by journals to the maximum number of pages per article. In this work we observe this positive correlation between the increase in the number of references per article and the overall increase in JIF but, in our analysis, a kink point is observed in consistency with the appearance of online databases, particularly those free available in 2004. Online databases along with the widespread of open access publishing option made the research content easily available to the scientific community contributing to an increasing trend (without apparent saturation) in the number of articles used to contextualize the new scientific contributions.

We're hiring in technology ethics, very broadly construed, and I'd really appreciate people helping to spread the word very broadly because the position isn't just for philosophers. The job ad is a little unwieldy, so here are some key things (from my perspective) that might help you spread the word and convince people to apply:
- This search has two lines. One hire will be jointly appointed in philosophy. The other will also be jointly appointed but not in philosophy.
- One of the lines will contribute to existing efforts to integrate ethics into our computer science curriculum (and be jointly appointed in computer science).
- We're looking for interdisciplinary scholars (but, like, really) both in philosophy and in other disciplines that we can hep us to build bridges across our college and university that enable us to draw on the humanities, social sciences, etc. to inform technology design.
- Junior candidates should not be scared off because the search is open rank! We recognize that lots of interdisciplinary talent is at the junior level.
- There is no secret thing we are looking for that we've coded into the ad. There is no particular person the ad is written to attract and ultimately hire. If the ad seems strange its because it is meant to attract a broad audience and writing ads is very difficult.
- Candidates that think they are a borderline fit should probably apply. Candidates that wish the job was slightly different because then they'd be a fit should keep an eye on the Northeastern jobs page because we are advertising several positions that are adjacent to this run by other people/departments.
- If you have someone you think I should talk to about the position to encourage them to apply, please put me in touch.
Here's a link to the ad (it is also on philjobs): https://northeastern.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/careers/details/Assistant--Associate--or-Full-Professor-of-Ethics-and-Values-in-Design_R119791-1?q=ethics
