@wittyeti.bsky.social I actually shouted at the car radio when that quote was played on the news. "women having equal rights" - this from the person whose government was responsible for killing pay equity in NZ

Want a thriving startup ecosystem in New Zealand? Start by building affordable housing | deadSimpleTech

In this article, I tackle the single biggest factor, to my mind, that's hampering the development of a strong tech and startup industry in this country: the absolutely execrable state of our housing market.

Many of you asked that I react to Richard Dawkins announcing that he fell for a chatbot. Instead of just pointing and laughing (my initial reaction obv) I dug into the “why” of it all: his obfuscations, insecurities, and utter sadness https://skepchick.org/2026/05/richard-dawkins-claude-delusion/

It looks like New Zealand is going to abolish their media regulator, the Broadcasting Standards Authority.

This will inevitably give the far right, liars, scammers and politicians a much looser connection with the truth.

As citizens we can turn to web archiving to preserve evidence of perceived shenanigans.

Go to https://web.archive.org/save/ to push a web page to archive.org. Works less well with social media and web applications than standalone websites.

You can also drop a line to the National Library of New Zealand, who can archive pages you believe are in danger of being removed from the web. Also works with entire sites.

I'm inspired to see many long-standing Fediverse supporters, moderators, admins, and code contributors volunteer their expertise for Discovery Week! I can't wait to learn from you all.

But we're missing some important voices: Non-technical users.

Which is why I have a favor to ask: Please share this post with someone you know who is a casual, non-technical user of Mastodon or any social platform. I want to make sure we're hearing from a wide range of perspectives!

“what the coding agent is good for is mostly writing code that you shouldn't be having to write in the first place”

A truly excellent piece on the interplay of engineering judgment and LLM coding tools

@AdminKirsty Thank you :)

The local council site signage page still only contains information for the 2023 general election, but that says no earlier than 9 weeks from the start of voting (that year July 31 for an October election) and that probably hasn't changed / I haven't heard that we're officially having a snap election, so I've sent them a message.

#NZPol are election hoardings - i.e. Vote [party] _allowed_ to be up at this time / already?

"What do you usually paint?" the wizard asked.

"I do a lot of pet portraits, but if it's for myself I like to paint fancy animals."

"Like a winged tiger?"

"Yes! You've seen that?"

"Ah. The canvas you used-"

"I got it cheaply, but it's good quality."

"-was enchanted, to make the subject real."
