Hannah Arendt wrote in 'Über das Böse' that evil is not hiding. It is not exceptional. It is banal — ordinary and relentless. Right in front of our face.
Nothing is black and white. Not every Israeli voted for Netanyahu. Not every Palestinian is a Hamas supporter. Not every Russian is a Putin fan. Not every German was a Nazi. Not every American voted for Trump. Etc etc
And still — the evil is there. Right in front of our face. Ordinary. Banal. Relentless.
By then, by now.
I read Edgar Hilsenrath's grotesque masterpiece 'The Nazi and the Barber' more than twenty years ago. In the last few years, I keep being brought back to it.
The victim becomes the perpetrator. The perpetrator becomes the victim. Simple psychology. Horrifyingly true.
Gaza. Iran. Lebanon. Sudan. Congo. Ukraine. Myanmar. The names change. The dynamic doesn't.

This weekend I’ll be performing with actor Timon Blok at the theatre festival HIstories.
We perform in the stunning Onze Lieve Vrouwen church in Bilthoven — an architectural icon and the perfect setting for this story.
HIstories is a theatre festival built around personal stories of people and houses in and around De Bilt, Biltoven and Zeist.
