This is one of those days when our democracy feels like a turtle flipped on its back under attack from a pack of hyenas.

... NO. Townshend fit right in with the punks and post-punks of 1977-85 that he’d helped give birth to. If Paul Weller is the mod-father, Townshend is the grand-mod-father. In his late 30s and early 40s, he was holding his own with The Jam, The Police, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, The Beat, Squeeze, and The Clash quite well, thank you very much. T

My big takeaway from this #PeteTownshend #binge is that while The Who peaked in 1971 with Who's Next, Townshend's solo career peaked—not as I’d previously thought about it: a middle-aged rocker from the late-60s and early-70s trying keep making classic rock or to fit in with late-70s and early-80s new wave depending on his mood.

Pete Townshend

His solo peak stands on its own with his peers. And they are not who you think.

Two thoughts on this #Juneteenth
National Independence Day.

1. Juneteenth is an important national holiday for all Americans who love liberty and are committed to democracy for all American citizens.

2. Slavery wasn’t an asterisk appended to American democracy. It was a state-sanctioned system of totalitarian terror. It negated the idea of America as a true and full democracy. Juneteenth was a key milestone in our history on par with the Fourth of July.

The Agromodernist Moment
...I think the most leverage will come from synthetic biology, the various explorations of using algae, bacteria, and fungi to produce useful compounds. At the apex of that mountain range is fermenting fungi to produce new plant meats. Then in converting streams of organic matter into useful products. After that, things shift from what I consider novel technologies to new practices in farming, mostly in improving soil health.

The Humungous Fungus Among Us

There is tremendous interest these days in the leverage embodied in fungus.  I think the most leverage will come from synthetic biology, the various explorations of using algae, bacteria, and fungi to produce useful compounds. At the apex of that mountain range is fermenting fungi to produce new plant meats. Then in converting streams of organic matter into useful products. After that, things shift from what I consider novel technologies to new practices in farming, mostly in improving soil health.

The Agromodernist Moment
You may have seen reports of the farmer protests in France. Both the issues and the nature of the protests draw some differences between ag in the U.S. and Europe into sharp relief. In this essay, I’ll sketch some thoughts on these differences.
