Did you know that MAP Afterschool students are building their own structures? From geodesic domes made from newspapers to retail shops constructed from shipping boxes, our young artists and engineers are learning essential skills like problem-solving, hand-eye coordination, and spatial reasoning. Last summer, MAPFLC hosted a five-concert series featuring our music teachers, performing music from around the world. The concerts, which were free and open to the public, showcased our teaching artists in a family-friendly setting. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

A few years ago, we hosted a Pi Day concert with MAP instructors. Programmer-teacher Walter Bender shared a way to calculate Pi using visual code.

Today, the afterschool students used Turtle Blocks to create four-leaf clovers. Using an origami shamrock as a reference, students were asked to modify their code from a three-leaf clover to a four-leaf. For any students that completed this task, they could try changing the color and shade of the leaves and even try creating a stem. We all had a great time. And now we're all ready for St. Patrick's Day.

One of our guitar students, Dorje, was recently gifted a guitar! Occasionally, we receive instrument donations, and this guitar was given to a student who needed a new instrument and certainly deserved it given his dedication. Plus, a few weeks after receiving the instrument, he figured out how to restring the guitar by himself and began playing fingerstyle arrangements of popular music. Keep up the great work!
