I study the end of the world and how we got here. Author of the upcoming 'Goliath's Curse: A History and Future of Societal Collapse'. Research Affiliate with the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, University of Cambridge.

New theory on how #SocietalCollapse works just dropped. In his book "Goliath’s Curse: The History and Future of Societal Collapse”, @lukekemp describes how human societies repeatedly fall into the same trap: when resources become easily controlled and people can't easily leave, #DominanceHierarchies emerge. These systems (Kemp calls them '#Goliath') extract wealth from the many to benefit elites.

The twist? Throughout history, collapse often freed people from oppressive systems. But today we've built a global system where collapse would likely be catastrophic—#NuclearWeapons, #ClimateChange, and complex supply chains mean there's no going back to simpler times."

If you want to learn more about this, how it played out in history and what it might mean for our own future, check out my summary of the book: https://existentialcrunch.substack.com/p/the-peoples-history-of-collapse

Want to know more about societal collapse? Follow me! I recently got some funding from Open Phil
to write a #LivingLiteratureReview about #SocietalCollapse.

I am happy to present the first post of this series. It is meant to give a general overview about #collapse research: What are the main schools of collapse research? What even is a collapse? And what causes it?
