Isolated northern chemist and embarrassing elderly relative.
Not to be confused with the Great and the Good.

One time magnetochemist - helped develop the CAMMAG computer package

Managed the UK National Chemical Database Service in what, in retrospect, were its halcyon days

Still tries to tinker with CrystalWorks when they let me

I have a calculator that is correct 80% of the time. But don't worry, every time I use it, I check the results myself.

As criticism of Palantir's NHS patient data system work grows and a number of hospital trusts continue to not use it (and those that are, are often doing so partially), the Govt. is apparently exploring using a break clause in the contract to end Palantir's NHS work.

If they do, I think I can safely say Palantir will not go quietly; expect a challenge to the legality of using the break clause (if the Govt. does) & significant pressure from Palantir's political allies.

Trump is waging war based on instinct and it isn't working

One month into the conflict in Iran, Trump's gut-instinct approach is not proving effective.

The narrative that all we need to do to solve our energy crisis is to exploit the North Sea more is undermined by the actual output of those field issued exploration & production licences in the last decade... they're not producing very much at all.

Rather than listen to the fossil fuels lobby what the UK needs to do is really push further with the green transition to renewables & better storage.

Here, Ed Miliband is on the right side of history!

"Meet Matt Brittin: ex-Googler and, if reports are to be believed, the BBC’s next director general. An executive search yielded an apparent shortlist of four women – who between them had decades of experience in broadcasting, news, and public service journalism – and one man, who didn’t"

Will Google’s AI hype man kill the BBC?

Matt Brittin spent two decades at Google, a tech company helping to destroy journalism. His appointment as leader of Britain’s biggest news organisation represents an existential threat, writes Carole Cadwalladr

#Trump dementedly rambling late yesterday about #NATO :

“We would have always been there for them, but now, based on their actions, I guess we don't have to be, do we?" Trump told the audience.

"That sounds like a breaking story? Yes, sir. Is that breaking news? I think we just have breaking news, but that's the fact. I've been saying ‌that. Why would we be there for them if they're not there for us? They weren't there for us."

Yet largely ignored by media today.

Report: Iran has agreed to a UN taskforce helping safe passage of humanitarian shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

The focus is to assist "ships carrying fertilisers & related raw materials to help prevent a humanitarian crisis in the ME, Africa, Asia & beyond."

Iran war updates: Houthis target Israel again; Iran says infrastructure hit

These were the updates on the US-Israeli war on Iran on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

The UK bet its future on being open to trade generations ago, and this has intensified as the UK's economy has been engineered into a focus on services rather than manufacturing; so when supply chains are disrupted prices rise & supplies are constrained.

The US/Israeli attack(s) on Iran are now having a wide range of disruptive effects as we know, but the latest to be identified as a potential problem is medicines.... that might be pretty serious!

UK ‘weeks away’ from medicine shortages if Iran war continues, experts say

Concern that supply chain disruption could hit health essentials – and prices – from painkillers to cancer treatment

The North Sea is a classic example of a mature hydrocarbon basin. Essentially stated, the large reserves are the easiest to find & are found first. As time goes on further discoveries are increasingly hard to find & at significantly higher cost.

Anyone who thinks that the North Sea will help give the #UK any energy security needs to do their homework (or could people calling for increased N Sea drilling just perhaps be playing politics?). #energy #hydrocarbons
