Er war in den siebziger Jahren Stadtguerillero bei den Tupamaros, sass dreizehn Jahre in Haft und wurde 2010 Präsident von Uruguay. José Mujica verzichtete bis zum Ende seines Lebens auf jeden Luxus und blieb ein scharfer Kritiker des Kapitalismus.
