Essential Computer Science Lore

Watching a class of undergrad CS students work on a midterm exam for a C programming course was a good motivator to start putting together this list of “Essential CS Lore”. I believe that any CS student or practitioner (or adjacent), as well as anyone interested in the discipline should have detailed knowledge of all of these!

This was a fun project for winter break!

Is there still a role for academic research in cyber security?
The last little bits of work on a brand new mini ctf for my students. Nothing like some hands on fun to close out the semester! 10 trivia questions and 10 small hands on challenges. Write up of solutions is 40% of the deliverable!

So far not much traction on this one, so I guess I'll have to start putting together some stuff myself. Initial ideas:

scan a network and discover live IP addresses
- Include non-ping hosts

  • perform a port scan of the live IP addresses to find services
    • Include non-top-1000 ports
  • Intercept and analyze network traffic
    • pcap containing password.
    • pcap containing encrypted content
  • Write IDS rules to intercept traffic
  • Intercept https traffic and analyze certificate

I would like this to take about 2.5 hours to complete start-till-end. Any other suggestions that could be fun/educational? https://infosec.exchange/@leune/113533043640101685

I am looking for suggestions to have sophomore college students (CS majors) play a CTF focused primarily on network/cloud security. Does anything like that exists, or am I going to have to build this myself?

Did you know that number stations are still somewhat alive on shortwave radio? Check out https://priyom.org for schedules and then head over to http://kiwisdr.com/public/ to tune in to one and see if you can listen in! #numberstations #oddities #hamradio

I really do work at a beautiful campus
That is disappointing. Setting up and connecting the HF antenna system for the first time in months and finding that all bands measure an SWR of four or higher. Workable with a tuner, but far from ideal. Time to break out measuring equipment to figure out where the issue is. #hamradio #amateurradio
