Senate Bill 2588 will allow the Mississippi secretary of state to enter the entire voter rollbook, also known as the Statewide Elections Management System, into a federal citizenship verification system annually.

“The amount of untaxed wealth hidden offshore by the richest 0.1 percent exceeds the entire wealth of the poorest half of humanity (4.1 billion people), according to a new Oxfam analysis published on April 2, 2026, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Panama Papers.

The findings show that, a decade later, the super-rich continue to exploit offshore systems to evade taxes and conceal assets, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated international action to tax extreme wealth and end the use of tax havens.

An amount of $3.55 trillion in untaxed wealth was stashed offshore in tax havens and unreported accounts in 2024, according to Oxfam’s estimates. “This sum exceeds the GDP of France and is more than twice the combined GDP of the world’s 44 least developed countries,” a statement by Oxfam noted.“

Untaxed wealth hidden offshore by richest 0.1% surpasses entire wealth of the poorest half of humanity: Oxfam

Oxfam’s new analysis reveals that untaxed offshore wealth held by the richest 0.1% now exceeds the entire wealth of the poorest half of humanity, exposing how tax havens fuel extreme inequality and urging global action to tax the super-rich and end secrecy.

Down To Earth

Like a lot of small businesses in our region, Firestorm has been in financial distress for the last year. Hurricane Helene was our tipping point, but local cost of living increases, inflation, and higher occupancy costs are huge contributors. In simple language: our sales are down, our costs are (way) up, and capitalism is the worst.

With less than $15k in financial buffer left, we've projected that our co-op will no longer have the resources needed for normal operations by the end of July.

⚠️ What We're Doing

Over recent months, we've analyzed our situation and explored possible interventions. We're planning to modestly increase store hours, refresh our Sustainers Program, explore new advertising opportunities, better promote our bulk / B2B sales, research grants for unfunded work done by our members, and look for new pop-up gigs. More immediately, we're planning a big sale for mid-April and we've requested and received a temporary reduction to our mortgage.

Our hope is that a handful of short-term measures will buy us time to pursue the longer-term shift in revenue needed to stabilize Firestorm. If we don't succeed, our nuclear option is a cut to pay. As a horizontal co-op we set a payrate democratically, so no changes take place without buy-in from our whole team, but moving away from a living wage runs counter to our collective health.

⚠️ What You Can Do!

If Firestorm surviving and thriving is important to you, we welcome your support. Here are a few ways to pitch in:

🌈 Buy your next book from us, or tell someone who buys books about us! Not a physical media person? We also sell audiobooks through Libro.fm.

🌈 Join our Sustainers Program, starting at $10/mo! Members receive discounts on books and can access free shipping, a monthly book subscription, and other great perks.

🌈 If you work in an organization that coordinates book-related programs, reach out to us about bulk purchasing (we offer discounts!)

We extend our huge appreciation to everyone who is already supporting our co-op financially, or otherwise! We've only made it this far because of you.

“This case study is a masterclass in scientific reasoning," said Brugel. "They identify a cluster, associate it with overexposure to pesticides, obtain transcriptomic and epigenetic data, compare them, notice they are different, generate a hypothesis and open up a new avenue." Not only did this study identify several hundred areas nationwide that had an increased risk of cancer due to environmental pesticide exposure, but it also offered an explanation for the mechanisms by which these substances can combine to subtly promote the development of cancers in certain organs.”

Pesticides and cancer: For the first time, researchers find a connection at the national level

French researchers have developed a model to map pesticide exposure across Peru to reported cancer clusters. They demonstrate a 'robust spatial association' between these chemicals and increased cancer incidence rates in over 400 areas.

"Why are flights in the UK so often cheaper than taking the train?"

Some of the reasons are nonsensical:
for trains:

"The fuel is subject to VAT at 5% on diesel and 20% on electricity.".

this should be the reverse?!?

for planes:

"Fuel accounts for a much bigger part of airlines’ costs, but they do not have to pay VAT or duty on it.".

whyyyy??
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2025/nov/19/why-are-flights-in-the-uk-so-often-cheaper-than-taking-the-train

#SaveThePlanet and tax planes in proportion of the damage they do to their environment!

Why are flights in the UK so often cheaper than taking the train?

The environmental costs of flying are much higher, and the government subsidises rail travel, so what explains the baffling price difference when travelling domestically?

The Israelization of liberal democracies becomes more visible. The illusion of the vote (as in "the only democracy of the ME") obscures the repression of minorities perceived as encumbrances (eg migrants, refugees, Muslim communities) and those who stand with them. Even MPs.

Trump wants to sell Ukraine to Russia and personally get the money?
Since the end of the shipping of Biden's approved weapons in Jan 2025, Trump has shipped zero. Any US material supplied since has been bought by Europe.
Trump & Orban are selfish bullies.

The doctors, some NGO workers and volunteers who show up to give training and shots are often disgusted with this reality. There are OTHER good reasons why one might want to keep tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS at bay in this world. It's moral, it gradually makes the whole world more wealthy and stable, and it's safer. That is: USAID would benefit the US even if the cobalt mine were nationalized.

US business people do not want to hear this.

Anyway this has all been cut. 3/

Oh, Canada, Canada, the absolute devastation you do to Indigenous people and Wild Nature around the world.
