Valentine's Day 2023 - Definitely one of the best aurora displays I've seen, although we had a few great ones this year! Still about 56 more days before it starts getting dark enough to see them in Fairbanks, Alaska. https://photos.lwpetersen.com/Galleries/Alaska-Photos/Aurora-Borealis/

Intro to the broad range of topics to be covered in my Physics of Photography Series - light and electromagnetic waves, the camera obscura, image formation, aberrations, geometrical optics, the physics of exposure, and more!

I'm very excited that after a long delay, this series is finally gaining feet. The next article will cover the many ways in which photography is used in various scientific fields.

Late spring aurora from the Granite Tors Trail near Fairbanks, Alaska. It's only two days until the solstice and about 60 days before it gets dark enough in the Alaska interior to see the northern lights again. I miss our winter night skies, but our spring/summer season is going way too fast!

A fresh dusting of snow reveals the wall of a crevasse on the Gulkana Glacier in the Eastern Alaska Range. The waterfall into the glacier makes this place feel surreal.

Here's my hiking guide to the area: https://www.lwpetersen.com/alaska-guide/gulkana-glacier-hike/

Gulkana Glacier Hike - Guide to Hiking Alaska's Trails and Backcountry

The Gulkana Glacier area has much to offer, including day-hiking, backpacking or mountaineering expeditions, or just a roadside view of the glacier.

Smallflowered anemone (Anemone parviflora) near the Savage River in Denali National Park last weekend. The newest addition to my Alaska Wildflower Guide: https://www.lwpetersen.com/alaska-wildflowers/smallflowered-anemone-anemone-parviflora/
Smallflowered anemone - Anemone parviflora - Lee Petersen

Anemone parviflora commonly known as the smallflowered anemone, windflower, or northern anemone is a white flowering plant very similar to the narcissus-flowered anemone. It's found in Alaska, throughout Canada, and the northwestern US.
