Probably a stupid 'UK thinking' question, but why don't the Dems just kick him out of the party. It's what would happen here if someone repeatedly supported the opposition on important matters. Our MPs will often rebel, but usually en masse over a matter of principal. Someone just repeatedly backing the other team, on their own would 'lose the whip'. Main benefit to party is it means they can't stand as a member at the next election so you are 1 term away from excising the boil.
I suppose that's slightly less unpleasant than pushing him our of a window like the Russians do.
