Game dev engineer with an appreciation of old machines & softwares, concerned by what science tells us about incoming environmental "difficulties".
Curious of all things, shocked by none.

This is a core system app interrupting you, promoting a sale by a movie-ticketing company, to push you to go see the platform vendor’s new movie.

Why not just pop up random ads all the time, always creating new channels that everyone’s opted-into by default so you can never keep up with opting out of them all?

Oh wait, that’s already what happens.

Apple’s as bad as everyone else. They don’t respect their customers — we’re fodder.

They truly have no standards anymore.

We are facing an uphill battle when kids trust ChatGPT’s hallucinations over teachers.
Social media already enabled adults to create their own lalaland disconnected from reality but the next generation whose parents are not educated enough to teach their kids to be wary of LLMs may be even worse.

if you know me, you know that the hill i'm willing to die on is that elitism around functional programming is absurd, and that the concepts of functional programming, like monads, are in fact fairly approachable.

so, i'm putting my money where my mouth is: i'm opening this for the next two weeks: https://nicuveo.youcanbook.me/. book a meeting (for free, obviously), and in less than 30 minutes i'll convince you that you too can understand and recognise monads.

the presentation has no haskell, no maths, no category theory, and very little code. the only requirement: some programming knowledge, experience with at least one language. (ideally one of C++, Rust, C#, Java, Python, Go or JavaScript, which are the ones i mention in my slides).

The Met Office is soliciting future storm names. Needs as many people as possible IMHO to submit the names of oil companies and other big polluters causing #climatechange problems.

So many of Apple security updates were fixes to libxml2 that this is bound to have an effect.
Most likely alas, this will mean that Apple will choose to reimplement it then badly neglect it like they do with the rest of their software once the WWDC spotlight is not on it anymore. If feels like paying independent developers for their work is really at odds with Apple’s DNA and overall view of devs place in the food chain.

The solo maintainer for libxml2 is no longer accepting embargoed vulnerability reports, citing the unsustainable burden as an unpaid volunteer. Security issues will be treated like any other bug report moving forward. https://socket.dev/blog/libxml2-maintainer-ends-embargoed-vulnerability-reports #opensource #cybersecurity h/t @joshbressers@infosec.exchange

@duhproject @sanxion Are you guys aware that episodes lower than number 50 are not available from podcast apps? I am catching up on the old shows but I have so far not been able to find and listen to the initial ones.
Is there some kind of technical reason for this?

Yup.

“… effects of generative #AI are likely to mirror broader trends of job transformation already unfolding today, namely de-skilling and surveillance.”

“outputs could substitute for …workers with average levels of competence”

“the likely outcome of the generative AI boom will not be mass joblessness, but a worsening of work conditions”

“reflects the priorities of firms seeking to lower costs, discipline workers, and consolidate profits”

Is the AI Bubble About to Burst?

In the years since Automation and the Future of Work first appeared, a new wave of technological enthusiasm has swept across the popular imagination. The catalyst this time has been the rapid advances in generative artificial intelligence, spearheaded by companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta. Once again, a c

fungi

fungi is a preset generator for the DX7/TX7 FM synth. The presets are generated using a genetic algorithm in which the sonic farmer is the fitness function, that is to say *you* decide what sounds good before evolving the pool of fungi made of 32 presets.

The automation of boilerplate code is not a selling point of generative AI, but an indictment of the language.
Funny. I had been thinking about just that the past few days, however, not for “high end Amigas”, thank you. What’s the point of targeting a niche inside the already niche Amiga public? Target the stock models if you want to reach people.
