Attic Kylix depicting Jason and Athena ~ 480-470 BCE
Jason falls victim to the serpent set by King Aeëtes to guard the Golden Fleece. This scene shows Jason being saved by Athena. He seems to be stuck in the serpents mouth and exhausted from his struggle. The Fleece remains just out of reach. Athena’s arrival heralds the possibility of imminent rescue.
The kylix is attributed to the Attic artist Douris.
