📢 ⚖️ SCIENTISTS ON TRIAL! Today📆

Monday, Jan 15th, 3 scientists are facing trial right now in Germany for acts of civil disobedience in resistance against Governments' blatant exacerbating of the ongoing climate emergency.

These actions were taken during the Unite Against Climate Failure campaign, in coalition with Debt For Climate, Letzte Generation, and other groups.

The local Scientist Rebellion group in Norway was awarded last Friday as the "Communicator of the year" by the science faculty of NTNU, for outreach work on climate change. I’m impressed that the university is recognizing an activist group using civil disobedience! I hope this means the conversation is moving to the right direction.
I was happy to get a chance to talk about climate activism as a scientist at the British Ecological Society annual meeting last week. I'm impressed that a workshop on activism was part of the official program of the conference, and how much interest there was in terms of taking action. Even though we still need to do a lot more to slow down the climate crisis, it's encouraging to see that the conversation is moving forward.

Our government recently approved drilling in the huge Rosebank oil field in the North Sea, in spite of overwhelming opposition from experts. A successful campaign forced Shell to pull out of the Cambo oilfield - now we need to #StopRosebank

We'll be in Cornmarket on Saturday 28th from 12-2pm talking to passersby and encouraging them to support the campaign and to join XR. We need people to hold banners and placards and to help with outreach. Bring placards, flags and your voices for chanting!

#introduction
I am a plant ecologist at #NTNU in Norway, currently studying the #ecology and evolutionary dynamics of invasive species. I am interested in species interactions, #plant #ecophysiology and using functional #traits to understand ecological patterns.

I am frustrated at the slowness of climate action, and scared of where our world will end up with the current trajectory. I take direct action with groups like #ScientistRebellion and #StoppOljeletinga.

The Montana climate case includes a key finding.

“Every additional ton of GHG emissions exacerbates Plaintiffs’ injuries & risks locking in irreversible climate injuries.” These injuries “will grow increasingly severe & irreversible without science-based actions to address climate change."

This eviscerates the argument by any state, country, or corporation that their small share of emissions doesn't matter or need to be cut.

EVERY bit of GHG emissions matters.

Montana climate case delivers win for youth, science, and the environment

“The science is clear that there are catastrophic harms to the natural environment of Montana and Plaintiffs and future generations...”

Born in 1838, Margaret Knight invented a machine that could efficiently build paper bags with a design that made packing easier.

And right on cue - for those who follow #HistoryRemix - a man tried to steal credit.

Charles Annan glimpsed her prototype & filed a patent. Thankfully, many people had seen Knight's invention + she had the blueprints.

Knight took Annan to court & won! She received her patent in 1871 & went on to receive dozens more. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/meet-female-inventor-behind-mass-market-paper-bags-180968469/ #history #design
