FreeBSD hacker. Has been known to touch pf and lived to regret it.
Strong opinions on bikes and the need to crush all cars into tiny cubes.
Rather foolishly volunteered to run EuroBSDCon 2026 in Brussels.

And in case y'all don't know what #Hillhacks is: it's a small (un)conference up in the Himalayas. This year from June 3rd to 7th (so shorter than usual), but I still expect it to be awesome.

hillhacks

hillhacks is held in the lap of the stunning Dhauladhar Himalayas every summer. People from different places, walks of life and lines of thought come together to share, collaborate and learn. Hackers talk code. Artists share their creativity. Students join in from schools and colleges to learn new skills. Locals and globals mix and mingle. We build things like tables, hula hoops, interactive art installations, and solar lanterns. We connect. We dance and sing. Ideas emerge. Collaborations form. Lives change. In the hacking, we get hacked ourselves.

@davidgerard

As I understand it, the state of copyright for LLM-generated output is:

  • The person who promoted the LLM cannot assert copyright on the output (US copyright office ruling, confirmed in court).
  • People whose copyrighted materials were used as the training data may be able to assert copyright on the output as a derived work (inconclusive case law).

So accepting LLM-generated code seems very high risk. Especially for something like ext4, where itโ€™s likely that there is exactly one implementation in the training set.

EDIT: I donโ€™t expect the second to be settled conclusively any time soon, because thereโ€™s a lot of subjectivity in existing human-only derived-work cases.

REMINDER:

The people who insist that AI is inevitable are the people who insisted the Metaverse is inevitable are the people who insisted NFTs are inevitable who insisted that cryptoscams replacing currency were inevitable.

Do not be the fucking idiot that parrots them.

The European BSD conference, EuroBSDcon 2026 will be in Brussels, 9-13 September 2026.

You can send your talk, tutorial, BOF or other session submission to our program committee before June 20th, see https://2026.eurobsdcon.org/cfp/

EuroBSDCon 2026

Wanneer starten we de autoloze zondag (en bij voorkeur ook maandag tot vrijdag) weer op? Oliecrisis dringt nog niet door zeker?

Reminder: AI "generated" code is 100% plagiarized. You must not accept code of unknown provenance into your code base. Doing so opens you up to potential copyright infringement lawsuits. Nobody needs a repeat of the SCO vs IBM lawsuit over ownership of Unix.

Accepting AI-assisted code is just legally untenable. That's black and white, there's nothing to debate. Projects that accept it are idiots and should be shunned.

Stop using AI, people. I don't care if it makes things easier for you. You're sucking up water, burning the planet, models were trained on stolen data, and you're making the rich even richer. And I didn't even list all of the issues with AI.

BSD Conference in NL

On Saturday, 9th of May, there is the Spring edition of BSD-NL  Our lovely BSD conference, held in the Netherlands. Or more specifically, in Utrecht - which is the centre of our little country.
