@mario In the olden days (think Kamakura/Muromachi periods, although I think the transition dates back to the Heian period), while the kana spelling was あふ, it was pronounced おう. So if you read a text from that time, you wouldn't pronounce it あう.
There are places called 逢坂(おうさか), too, by the way, and if I'm not mistaken, one of them is in 大阪! Confusing enough? 🤣
Anyway, thought you might find this interesting, too.
@mario Do you already know the reason for the pronunciation being the same even though the verb in the first case is 逢(あ)う?
@mario So it's probably just not for you then. Haven't read American Psycho, but I do like the movie, so I guess that makes it 2 out of 2 😅
I get it, maybe I wouldn't read any Mishima or Ishihara Shintarō either if I hadn't started translating. Anyway, I think what's most important is to also mention their problematic politics when talking about their literature.
@mario Interesting. Haven't read it in a while, but loved it when I did. I agree it's difficult to seperate the art from the artist, but on the other hand I can't lie when I actually do enjoy a novel by someone like Mishima.
@mario 😱 Guess I gotta keep my eyes peeled then! 😱
@mario Damn, just the UK? Lucky you!
