Opinion | The Future of Online Speech Shouldn’t Belong to One Trump-Appointed Judge in Louisiana

The politics of internet regulation have become too local.

@klonick is, as ever, quite right: "The future of online freedom shouldn’t be shaped by ideologically lopsided courts in far-flung federal jurisdictions or local politicians angling for the national stage."

As a child, a major quality I considered in developing friendship was whether or not they had a pool.

As an adult, if I find out someone has a pool, I slightly question their good judgment.

With disclaimer that the #USNewsRankings are stupid, I am so proud of @StJohnsLaw moving up *24* places to #60

For many years SJU has put student success as it's main priority (bar passage & jobs upon graduation). to the extent the new ranking reflects this, it's great for us

Next was a fantastic discussion with @klonick on Elon Musk's #Twitter takeover on the Digging a Hole podcast. While this conversation happened right as the takeover was happening, the points here are still very relevant and prescient for the challenges of running a modern social network platform. Highly recommend https://podcasts.google.com/u/1/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zODRlNWMyYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw/episode/NGEzNjgxZDQtODI1Zi00MjM5LTgxN2ItODc2MGY4YmViMTgz?sa=X&ved=0CAUQkfYCahcKEwi4wbS8-tL-AhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQLA (4/6)
Digging a Hole: The Legal Theory Podcast - Kate Klonick & the Twitter Takeover

In a matter dear to Sam and Dave’s livelihoods, we have a timely podcast to discuss Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover. There is no one better to get into the weeds of this issue than Kate Klonick. Kate is an Associate Professor of Law at St. John’s University Law School and a Visiting School at Harvard University’s Rebooting Social Media Initiative. She is a leading expert on social media companies, content moderation, and the private governance of online speech. If you want to understand why Elon Musk bought Twitter and the likely implications, you’ve come to the right post. David (Sam’s away) begins by asking the obvious – why is Elon doing this and what is his plan? Is he a tech genius or is this a completely irrational pet project? A lot has also been said about Twitter’s content moderation policy and Elon’s purported issues with it. Kate explains to us how Twitter’s policies are unique from those of other social media companies. She also delves into the consequences of Elon messing with these policies and, potentially, laying off much of Twitter’s staff that works on content moderation (right before an election!). The short- and long-term consequences of this takeover will be felt throughout society, so come learn more! _Referenced Readings_ * “_Elon Musk’s Management Style Is a Threat to Global Democracy_,” by Kate Klonick * “_Elon Musk, Plus a Circle of Confidants, Tightens Control Over Twitter_,” by Mike Isaac, Ryan Mac, & Kate Conger * “_Twitter, Once a Threat to Titans, Now Belongs to One_,” by Kevin Roose * “_Elon Musk is Busy With Twitter_,” by Matt Levine * “_Inside the Making of Facebook’s Supreme Court,_” by Kate Klonick * “_Implications of Revenue Models and Technology for Content Moderation Strategies_,” by Yi Liu, Pinar Yildirim, & Z. In oral arguments, Supreme Court justices asked a question that we can answer with science: do policies against harassment cause a chilling effect on freedom of expression?

In multiple large-scale field experiments, we have found that policies that restrict harmful speech actually increase the free exercise of speech rights.

Here's our latest data: https://citizensandtech.org/2022/08/harassment-prevention-across-communities/

Study Results: How well do harassment prevention interventions transfer between communities?

New findings across 3 communities reveal lessons about the effectiveness of social norms interventions across different communities.

@AnnemarieBridy This means so much to me Annemarie -- especially because it was exactly what I was trying to get at and accomplish. Thanks for seeing that.
