The 2023 "State of the Octoverse" report came out last week. This year, in addition to an overall ranking of most widely used programming languages, we have a ranking of the fastest growing languages by growth of contributors.

New batch of swing state polls do not look good 😰

A few comics for Indigenous Peoples' Day (Today) and/or National American Indian Heritage Month (Next month): La Voz De M.A.Y.O Tata Rambo; Come Home, Indio; Earthdivers; West of Sundown.

Of these, I've only read Come Home, Indio and West of Sundown. I recommend them both, especially Come Home.

I'd really like to add some comics by Indigenous women to that list if anyone has any recommendations.

Feel like the universe is trying to tell me something…
We took our almost-nephew to see the Marvel Superheroes exhibit at OMSI today. I thought it would just be movie stuff so I was pleasantly surprised to see tons of original art by the likes of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Bill Everette, Wally Wood, and Gil Kane. Here’s the only known original page from Marvel Comics # 1.
What makes me look forward to large language model-based search engines, whether that's ChatGPT or Bard or something else, is the ability to better parse intentions. Take, for example, a search for movies about Sicilians that aren't gangsters. Google strikes through "aren't" and returns the exact opposite of what I want. Bing doesn't do much better. I don't know if ChatGPT's list is accurate, but it seems to have at least tried to provide what I asked for.

I just found out that Mastodon instances have a very helpful /about/ page with information about moderators, server themes, rules, blocked instances, etc. I don't know why this isn't the default landing page for non-logged in users.

I’m still surprised this passage from this 2020 Willamette Week story didn’t make a bigger splash. It explains, in starkest terms, why elected officials don’t do more to reign in the police. https://www.wweek.com/news/city/2020/06/24/for-nearly-80-years-the-portland-police-association-has-wielded-power-in-a-town-that-doesnt-like-cops-that-power-is-now-under-siege/
For Nearly 80 Years, the Portland Police Association Has Wielded Power in a Town That Doesn’t Like Cops. That Power Is Now Under Siege.

Reform advocates say the police union has outmaneuvered City Hall at every turn: at the bargaining table, in the Legislature, and in court.

Here's a more Mark Millar/Garth Ennis take on superheroes. Warning: toilet humor.
