#Kir

Side-tracked scientist. Trying to work out how to re-start a career in evolutionary biology or find something else to do.

I can read about half a dozen alphabets and abjads - Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Hebrew, Greek - one day I will find a use for this? But I only speak English. I started on #Yiddish in August because it was that or actually learn some useful vocabulary in the others.

I cc my other profiles so I can see notifications on other servers.

I'm on a few different instances, so far nobody seems to object to this and it works for me. But if something I've done here is a problem and I'm not responding, tell my less erratic friends @TashTaylor or @quinsibell and they'll find me to fix it.

I try to keep my profiles vaguely themed to each instance's topic - so people I share one interest with don't get too many irrelevant posts - but this will be my general place to post from when that over 500 characters.

This rant evolved from a comment on a comment on a #JerusalemPost article.

Hamas are a bunch of sexist religious conservatives, I doubt they like queers, but the objections to Queer leftists opposing the war are nuts. The biggest pro war voices in Israel are anti #LGBTQ nationalist / religious extremists like #Bezalel_Smotrich who organised a #BeastParade to mock the pride parade in Israel.

Do guys like #Smotrich mean western #queers should all be in favour of the #7October attack? that logic is just as broken as saying we should support bombing and starving Gaza.

Other than the clear danger posed to EVERYONE in Gaza, including any (probably closeted) queers, bombing #Gaza while flying #RainbowFlags and talking about #WesternValues is MASSIVELY counter productive.

Persecuting queers seems to be a very low priority for Hamas. But, for example, in #Russia it is becoming very prominent and a central part of the rhetoric involved is accusing queer activists of being malicious agents of western imperialism.

I've found two documented cases of specific #LGBT people killed by Hamas, both men, both soldiers, both shot.

One of their own killed by firing squad in 2016. Western Tabloids said it was because he was gay, but the charge was vague, I'm not very confident that's the full story. It's possible, just currently I rate it as "not enough info".

And one IDF on 7 October, obviously not killed for being gay.

From what i have seen so far, I don't believe #Hamas was recently throwing anyone off buildings. All the photos I've seen claiming to be "Hamas would throw you off a building" have been ISIS, Hamas and #ISIS hate each other.

Vigilantes might have done it, but vigilantes in Sydney Australia threw 88 gay guys off a cliff, this doesn't mean bombing Sydney helps LGBT people.

A cop in Sydney killed a gay couple this year, i still don't think anyone should bomb Sydney, but if the #IDF want too come "neutralize" the NSW police?

Is this article daft or dishonest? The Israeli government did not "miss" that it was not just Hamas, the Israeli government are LYING. They know they can't say out loud in #English that their goal is the total destruction of Palestine, so they say their goal is the total destruction of "Hamas" and then separately say that they have to destroy #Palestine because "Hamas" are hiding behind it.

"even the Israeli government missed: The war and gruesome attacks against Israel have been framed as #Israel against #Hamas … (however) … there is plenty of conclusive evidence demonstrating that multiple Palestinian #terrorist organizations were involved in the barbaric attacks that occurred in Israel on October 7." https://www.jpost.com/opinion/article-769597

I agree with their description of the current situation - #Israel are at war with Palestine, not just #Hamas - but your solution will NOT work.

Subjugating Palestine doesn't make Israel or Europe or anywhere else more safe.

If Israel try "the whole nation must surrender and understand that they will have terms dictated to them" … the average human being's response to that is "give me freedom or give me death!"

If Israel try to give them ALL death, then most of the world will disagree with the statement "Israel has a right to exist". If Israel kills 5 million Palestinians (more like double that if those living abroad return home to join the fight), then the historical comparisons Israelis find extremely offensive will become very difficult to disagree with.

National total surrender worked when Japan surrendered to the USA. But post war Japan had much MORE autonomy than Palestine has NOW. That option would be an independent democratic Palestine with full membership of the United Nations. Also, Japan did not surrender until they were allowed to keep the emperor; even the goal of eliminating Hamas will not work.

The Palestinians, not just Hamas, have declared war on Israel - opinion

Until a total Israeli victory over the Palestinians, and a Palestinian surrender and understanding that they will have terms dictated to them, the conflict will continue.

These stories definitely have some layers to them.

The Insider

Gaza Ministry of Health looks like they might be are UNDER reporting war deaths.

Gaza's war death stats look somewhat like Russian #COVID data, which is to say, they look suspicious, but they definitely DON'T look like an over count.

🔗 https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(23)02713-7/fulltext 🔗 the Lancet article this data is from

It zig zags up, looking like real world data, then on about 27 October 2023 it simultaneously drops AND shows possible under-dispersion (a statistical term meaning the number per day is suspiciously consistent). It looks a bit like when #Russia were refusing to report more than 800 COVID deaths per day, but it' isn't quite as severe.

🔗 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9111161/ 🔗 "Underdispersion: A statistical anomaly in reported Covid data" Dmitry Kobak

This is unfortunately unlikely to be a real reduction because, despite reported war deaths in the general population halving, deaths of UN Workers increase.

It is possible the Government of Gaza are deliberately under-reporting deaths, exactly like Russia were during the pandemic. (Realistically if you started - or massively escalated - a war, and
got tens of thousands of people massacred by a much-better-armed enemy, you might not fully admit to how bad things were getting?)

But in this case I think it's more likely that deaths per day have exceeded Gaza's capacity to report them. Despite the constant accusations, the numbers Gaza's MOH are releasing are not just an estimate, they are only the named identified dead, they exclude anyone trapped under rubble and possibly those who ended up buried in mass graves (mild "citation needed" but I've heard that from moderately reliable sources and I'll believe it till I see a more reliable source refute it).

But it doesn't just hit a ceiling, something very suddenly goes wrong with their data reporting on 27 October 2023 (+/- 2 days) … I've not yet found what this corresponds to, but it might be around the time the #IDF ground invasion of Gaza began?
