This morning in #photos from #colonial #India — two dancers perform for a men’s listening assembly (mehfil) in #Kashmir c.1860.
Thought I would post two of my favourite examples of what the historian of Mughal and Rajput art, Molly Aitken, has called parataxis -- a juxtaposition of elements that forces the viewer to make the connections. The first is 17C Mughal and raw: two paintings literally pasted side by side. The second is 18C and fully integrated - Kavita Singh has suggested the Indian singer is singing the Persian lovers into existence; they are perhaps the focus of her song's lyrics.
Apologies to everyone who’s followed me and I haven’t followed back yet - it’s taking a while and I have a fractured wrist! And am in a very muggy sweaty children’s swimming pool doing my parental duty
@konrad I hear you’re running a spreadsheet of #twitterstorians arriving on Mastodon? Sign me up?
Hi #histodons I’ll be tooting about all things #SouthAsia and #Islamic, especially #history, #music, #culture and #art; about #Afghans at risk; about UK #highereducation; and various political things 😉
Hi. No idea who can see me as I’ve not got the hang of this at all yet! But I’ll be tooting about all things South Asia and Islamic, especially history, music, culture and art; about Afghans at risk; about UK higher education; and various political things 😉
Hi all! Not entirely sure I’ve managed to work this mastodon thing out yet, but hello!
