I suspect layers afford greater ‘autonomy’ for teams and have the added benefit of creating obscurity from the rest of the organisation.

Tech companies like to stack on layers upon layers of functionality instead of making the basic product that is promised better. Then there becomes so much bloat in a product that it becomes impossibly complex. I just want us to focus on just building solid stuff.
