"Optimism without honesty is denial"

Avatar pic is of me standing under partially cloudy sky on a coastline, back to the ocean, dressed in hiking boots, hiking pants, wearing sunglasses and a cap.

Having quite some success this summer with our 'Vegepod'. We have edible flowers, beans, chili, lettuces, many herbs++

This 'pod' garden system proved itself during Cyclone Gabrielle, which unleashed insane wind speeds upon us.

Well worth the investment, but surely something similar could be built from scrap metal, plywood and a suitable cover material. Whether it would be near as provably robust is another thing.

Concrete Utopia (Dir. Um Tae-hwa, 2023) is an excellent South Korean film looking at the socio-politics of post-disaster recovery, the abstraction of property and tensions of resource distribution. Impressive ruinscapes. Much recommended!

For those of you in Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara / Wellington, I'll be having a wee chat on disaster resilient communications on the 24th, at the very nice Vogelmorn, 4-6pm.

I'll dive into wired and wireless network fallbacks, from packet radio, to meshing, long-range analog radio and antennae options, low cost software radio, offline networking, on-prem locally served clouds and wikis, and good ol'fashioned walkie talkies.

Monthly Disaster Prep Gathering:COMMUNICATING IF NETWORKS FAIL — Vogelmorn Community

In this fourth session, Julian Oliver will be sharing his insight.

Vogelmorn Community
Great to see increased redundancy in the Meshtastic mesh over the water (Cook Strait) between North and South islands here, a pretty thriving scene around the Wellington region also. (map used: https://meshtastic.liamcottle.net)

Up and running. Decided to go with a Vert900 antenna as I have a bunch lying around and they've always served me well in the band.

While scanning the local mesh, I see that the first of the 25M sheep in this country has been added to the network.

These G2's just landed. Excited to put the stock G2 on the local mesh, by now thriving in my region. Will keep the Nano for my backpack! https://wiki.uniteng.com/en/meshtastic/station-g2
Station G2

The Station G2 features a 35dBm high power PA, specially designed ultra-low noise figure LNA and a Fast-Transient DC-DC. The Station Series aims to provide the best RF performance in all series with credit card size and rugged construction.

9 days until the Collapsathon 72hr writing sprint!

If you've got an hour or 3 for helping out the rest of us tardigrades - whether it's creating lists of links, or synthesising research into articles - we'd be stoked to have you onboard.

The wiki's now open for registrations 👇

Buzzed to see a Meshtastic network linking the North and South island here in Aotearoa New Zealand. A robust and low-power civilian-operated comms backup in the event of natural disaster.
