Coming soon to a United States of America near you.

A controlling parent doesn't let their kid have a photo ID or use a computer, which is their "right" under the Parents Decide Act.

The kid turns 18, and decides to try to get a photo ID. The first step to getting an ID is to make an appointment at the DMV.

That's easy to do, just hop on the DMV website and---oh, wait, you can't access the DMV website unless you scan your ID into your operating system to verify your age.

Well that's fine: if you can't access the DMV website you can call them. Oh wait, to call them you first have to scan your ID into your phone to verify your age.

I suspect part of the goal of the "parents decide act" is to allow abusive parents to continue to control their kids even after their kids turn 18.

The new law allows Israeli courts to officially impose death sentences on Palestinians, but this reality has already been normalized: since October 2023, more than 80 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody amid documented abuse, and thousands more are held in detention facilities that have effectively become a network of torture camps.

Our Director of International Advocacy, Sarit Michaeli, spoke with @democracynow about how this legislation institutionalizes the execution of Palestinians, the near-total impunity enjoyed by any Israeliharming Palestinian, and a new low in the policy of using lethal force and systematic oppression.

As I've noted before: the Strait of Hormuz is not blocked or closed, Iran is merely operating a tolling/gatekeeper system.... which should really be pretty familiar to the current incumbent of the Whitehouse & his big tech chums.

The fact that we are *not* seeing wildly improving software all around us tells us everything we need to know.

There is no flourishing of value delivery, new product categories, more needs being satisfied better. It’s the opposite.

All we are seeing is decreases in quality, because 👏 code 👏 creation 👏 is not 👏 the problem.

I'm a big fan of this explanation/rant from Andrew Murphy.

Taken as a whole, there are many bottlenecks in a corporate software development process. The "load-bearing" calendar is a great example!

Speeding up code creation just increases pressure on the bottleneck, which decreases throughput.

If you thought the speed of writing code was your problem - you have bigger problems | Debugging Leadership

AI coding tools are optimising the wrong thing and nobody wants to hear it. Writing code was already fast. The bottleneck is everything else: unclear requirements, review queues, terrified deploy cultures, and an org chart that needs six meetings to decide what colour the button should be.

🙌 The Tyee has done amazingly well with this piece. And again, this is NOT a historic roundup - COVID-19 has ongoing community transmission and is impacting people's lives and health, today, right now.

People are tired of the COVID pandemic. There is a desire to move on. But even today, as we write this, there continue to be outbreaks in hospitals and long-term care facilities in Alberta and elsewhere in North America.
