''Real Death Is Preferable to a Life Without Living.'' - Me

Diary Entry 8/8 (April 9th, 1524 – December 24th, 1524)

April 9:
Vasco Da Gama’s men came to my home early this morning to take me from my family once again. This time, it was not even a choice and rather a mandatory service established by the royals. Age has slowly been getting the better of me. My last voyage was twenty years ago and I was in my early twenties back then. Could I still be capable of maintaining the hard work involved in this voyage?

Diary Entry ⅞ (December 8, 1502 – February 20, 1503)

December 8:
It took us one week to make it to Cannanore. The wind and the sea did not cooperate well with us lately, sending nothing but minacious waves our way. Here, we are required to wait for an Arab ship to dock at the port. Chief Vasco intends to seize the ship along with all its contents. This chaotic circumstance is envisioned to occur in the next few days.

Diary Entry 6/8 (February 6, 1502 – November 29, 1502)

February 6, 1502:
Three years ago, Vasco da Gama commanded a crew of 170 men including myself on an expedition with the purpose of making it to India by rounding Africa. It has been a long time since our return from that monumental voyage. Today I set sail once more with Chief Vasco, who has been granted the title of admiral after his return from the first voyage by our King Manuel I.

Diary Entry ⅝ (February 1, 1499 – September 9, 1499)

February 1:
Our expedition made it to Mozambique today. I am not sure what the purpose of our sojourning here is. However, as this is our second visit to the country, Chief Vasco decided to erect his last padrão in order to ensure our establishment of Portuguese power here in Mozambique. Chief Vasco’s voyage so far, has exerted major influence on the culture and spice trade in Africa.

Diary Entry 4/8 (July 20, 1498 – January 8, 1499)

July 20:
This day marks the 2nd month we Portuguese have been in Calicut. The air was rather dense with smells of spices wafting through the trade markets. Vibrant streets teemed with the merchants that came from all across the globe, desperate to get a satisfying overview of all the exotic goods.

Diary Entry ⅜ (April 7.1498–May 20.1498)

April 7:
Our expedition has just made it to Mombasa, Kenya. This is however not where we will be staying. Malindi (also in Kenya) is where we are intending to drop anchor at. Therefore, the crew and I are still at sea. We have been at sea for a good month now. The horizon welcomed the sun that dipped down below it, resulting in a warm glow being disseminated across the landscape.

Diary Entry 2/8 (November 7, 1497–March 2, 1498)

November 7:
Subsequent to our departure from Santiago, Cape Verde, Chief Vasco relayed to all that we were bound for South Africa where we will be making a few halts. Tomorrow marks our 4th month since we sailed away from Lisbon and on this journey. I cannot deny, time passes fast on a ship that is secluded from the rest of the world for months.

Diary Entry ⅛ (July 8–July 26, 1497)

July 8:
My name is João Alvarez Pacheco, and I am one of the 170 men set to embark on a voyage initiated by commander in Chief Vasco de Gama for god knows how long. It is the 8th of July and a sunny day in my home-city Lisbon. Today we set sail in hopes to reach India for all the spices and goods Chief Vasco intends to obtain.
