Professor of Education Policy at Michigan State University. Data-driven critic of school privatization. Posts here my own.
Steep declines in academics, public funding for parents who’ve never sent their kids to public #schools, and relentless anti-#lgbtq and other discrimination. That’s #schoolvouchers #education ”freedom.”

How School Voucher Programs Hurt Students

Vouchers are largely tax subsidies for existing private school families, and a tax bailout for struggling private schools.

😬

Be wary of #schoolvouchers advocates claiming credibly causal impacts of #schoolchoice on migration to red states that also ban books, restrict #reproductivefreedom and discriminate against #LGBTQ families.

(Then ask an economist about that advocate’s, cough, “identification strategy”) #economics

Researchers rarely see anything as catastrophically bad for academic results as the scaled-up versions of #schoolvouchers programs—something supporters acknowledge. My comments to @TheEconomist

School-voucher schemes are spreading across America

This is despite little evidence that they improve academic achievement

I walk through the sub-prime #schools popping up when #schoolvouchers and related #education programs pass in my latest for the Dallas Morning News @dallasnews. Net net, vouchers create a new market of rapid entry/exit where a typical pop-up school lasts ~4 years. It’s why the academic results in scaled up programs are so bad. 👇

Vouchers don't deliver value to students or taxpayers

With the debate over school vouchers and similar programs heating up in Texas and across the country, it’s important to consider what we know from states that...

I joined Randi Weingarten this week to talk about the shooting at #MSU, common sense gun safety, and the horrific #schoolvouchers plans being rammed through state legislatures in the heartland.

Let’s get back to work. We need to support our #MSU students with whatever they need, and we need common sense gun safety now. I was asked to chat with @msnbc about our return to campus. #spartanstrong 👇

MSU professor on mass shooting: ‘You don’t think it’s going to happen here, and then it does’

Three students are dead and five more remain hospitalized after a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University. “Who’s the last parent that we’re going to ask to bury their child before some common sense action gets taken?” wonders Josh Cowen, education policy professor at MSU. He joined MSNBC guest host Paola Ramos to discuss how the campus is mourning and moving forward.

Devastated for our community and our students. And a special kind of angry.

Our governor’s statement is what I want to echo today: we should not, we cannot—and we must not—accept living this way. #MSU #msustrong

Michigan Senate will be 'taking action soon' on gun legislation after MSU shooting, majority leader says

"Living in the U.S. doesn't have to be this way," said Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who labeled gun violence "a uniquely American problem."

Weakening child labor laws is a fast route to reducing education among future generations

The education gains of the 20th C came from a combination of child labor restrictions, compulsory schooling laws, & investments in schools

Putting kids into these jobs moves us backwards to a poorer, harsher world

In a tight labor market, some states look to another type of worker: Children

Bills advancing in the Iowa and Minnesota state legislatures would roll back child workplace protections to address worker shortages.

I don’t love my dissent from former co-authors being covered as part of a story but I strongly believe #schoolvouchers are a discriminatory policy whose dismal academic record for at-risk kids should be weighed much greater than results of tiny field trials 20 years ago. Here’s everything you need to know about school vouchers in Texas

School vouchers aren’t a new idea. But over the past couple decades, voucher programs have expanded from small experiments to statewide policies.
