Open Web Docs has raised over $3 million to support the documentation of open-source web platforms, as well as funding a small global team and related expenses. At FOSS Backstage 2025, @jorydotcom and @floscholz discussed the economics of Open Web Docs, focusing on how the organisation 'sells' open documentation and diversifies its fundraising strategies.

Now at #FOSSBackstage: A @jorydotcom & @floscholz double act presenting the economics of @openwebdocs and about how documentation is critical digital infrastructure.
Good morning from Berlin, where #FOSSBackstage is kicking off! Looking forward to learning about what's "behind the scenes" with Open Source and supporting my friends @jorydotcom and @floscholz at their talk on the economics of @openwebdocs.

Project Economics: A case study with Open Web Docs

To our knowledge, we are the largest fund hosted by the Open Collective fiscal host, and the first to offer full time, locally-compliant, waged employment without an open source foundation. While there has been a lot of discussion about OS Funds such as the STF, we think guidance and dialogue for financial management for OSS projects is lacking and would like to spark that discussion by sharing what we've learned. We hope this will also be helpful for the OS Funds to consider, given that they will shape the next generation of open source projects.

I got to catch up with not one, not two, but three humans who mean a lot to me today ❤️

The last few years have felt isolating for a variety of reasons (you know the ones), but this little bit of rekindling was so comforting.

So I guess this is a reminder to check in with people you care about, for your mental health!

Embrace every opportunity to bless the people in your lives! 🩷
They got @geoff back at the helm at https://css-tricks.com/ he's been doing great cleaning the design up and getting content flowing, including big beefy guides. He's doing better than I ever did, so that's a win.
