Just how big is Meta's gargantuan Hyperion data center site?

We built an interactive map that lets you teleport the nearly 5-mile-long, 1-mile-wide Hyperion tract to some recognizable spots, like Manhattan, Washington DC, London, or even your own address.

Chuffed to be asked by @niemanlab for a 2026 prediction. I wrote about how someone will claim to achieve AGI next year, and how the news media will not be ready for it. Thank you @joshuabenton.com for the invitation!

A tech company will claim to have achieved AGI. The news media won’t be ready.

@KarlHeinzHasliP That’s just the STATE police budget. not all cops in Louisiana.

I took a deep dive into Meta’s “Hyperion” data center in Richland Parish, LA.

The scale of the tax breaks that Meta received are staggering. The company won’t have to pay any sales tax on severs, networking gear, or GPUs.

Sales taxes on just the ~$35 billion they will spend on GPU’s could fund the Louisiana state police for 7 years, or pay the salaries of all public school teachers in the state for more than a year.

The power play behind Hyperion, Mark Zuckerberg’s colossal data center being built in rural Louisiana

$10 billion of investment. Code names to disguise projects and companies. Mixed opinions. Skyrocketing property values. And enough tax breaks to pay every state cop in Louisiana for seven years.

Meta will begin using your AI chats to target you with ads.

But Meta has a spotty record protecting sensitive personal information from leaking into its ad platform. Previously, Meta’s pixel leaked sensitive data — financial, medical, and mental heath information.

The monetization of Meta’s expensive AI gambit has begun.

Apple is fifteen years into a project to design its own chips for key functions of its products. While competitors are just getting started making their own chips, Apple’s steady progress releasing new chips like clockwork gives it a key strategic advantage.

Systems-on-a-chip, wireless networking, cellular modems...the list keeps growing. Cameras are one of the last categories it hasn’t tackled yet.

I have a story about how researchers are using LiDAR to measure the damage from the January 2025 fires in Los Angeles in the September/ October issue of MIT Technology Review (@technologyreview) on newsstands now!
