Until the advent of southern European style cafes in the 1970s, these bars sometimes called "brown bars", were dungeons of darkness and smoke with dark windows and booths for people to convene and enjoy an adult beverage. On the decline ever since, some of these are still alive and kicking in local neighbourhoods.
