I’m a professor, filmmaker, and storyteller interested in the question of how we can transform ourselves—as individuals, as societies, as an entire species—in ways that allow our planet’s ecological systems to thrive. Subscribe at johnfiege.earth.

Young people are a crucial part of transforming the climate crisis, but their voices are seldom included in the discussion.

Beth Osnes, a theater artist, wants to change this and get young people more involved in these crucial climate conversations. Her performances allow young people to enact both the tragedies and utopic possibilities of the ecological crisis moment we all inhabit.

Imagine going up against a coal company to protect the health of your children and your community.

Alina Simone is a documentary filmmaker whose recent film, Black Snow, tells the story of a brave woman in Russia, named Natalia Zubkova, who went up against a Putin-backed coal company in her small town in Siberia.

In my conversation with award-winning documentary filmmaker, Christi Cooper, we discuss her documentary Youth v. Gov, filmed following the lawsuit Juliana v. United States. This was one of the first significant lawsuits to hold oil companies and governments accountable for climate impacts of their activities.

Waste is often invisible—or at least many people work hard to make it disappear. Through landfills, incineration, and cargo ships traveling across oceans, we have become adept at pretending that waste is not a problem and that it can disappear.

Next Thursday, April 16th, I will be recording a live podcast conversation on stage with Luella, along with Keith O'Brien, author of the book Paradise Falls: The True Story of an Environmental Catastrophe. Register at the link to attend in person or watch online.

Along with other residents and activists, like Lois Gibbs, Luella helped transform the disaster she was living into positive change. You can listen to my related conversation with Lois Gibbs here:
