also finally moved from synthetic bold and italic letterforms (via double striking and shearing) to actual bold and italic variants. this is one of those things where if you don't know, it just feels better and you don't know why — but if you do know it's the most massive breath of fresh air.

goal is to launch with Lucida Bright as the serif and Lucida Sans as the sans serif, at three sizes: 12pt, 16pt and 20pt. All BDF fonts, open sourced by Sun Microsystems in 1989 for their OPEN LOOK system.

big night for open book typography last night. stayed at the studio til midnight getting unicode fallback working, so we can have gorgeous Lucida Bright for text reading, while falling back to Unifont for individual words where it lacks coverage.
I’m actually surprised that 1,200 corner punches only amount to this. (also now that I have a corner punch, I am going to round the corners of every rectangle of paper I meet)
19 down, 1,181 corner punches to go.
on the one hand, I am extremely stoked to have the privilege of putting one of the coolest things I’ve ever made into the @oshwassociation swag bag next month. On the other hand, I am now annxious about the reality of shipping approximately 90 pounds of objects to Berlin in the next eleven days.
Penned 1924: “To kill one, that is, to reduce the general sum of human life by fifty years, was considered criminal, but to reduce the general sum of human life by fifty million years was not considered criminal! It didn’t enter the heads of all their Kants to build a system of scientific ethics, that is, ethics based on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.”
because I know you are all living and dying by my march madness pool: Claude's bracket is ahead, but dead; it picked Duke for champions. So it all comes down to tonight, and my buddy Zaq who picked Michigan: if Michigan wins it all, Zaq takes 320 points, and the humans defeat the machines (in what I assume is just one of many battles to come)

welp. halfway through the Elite Eight, Claude's bracket has broken into the top 10,000, which means it's doing better than 99.97% of the brackets in ESPN's tournament challenge. in one year I've gone from ‘lol its funny because the AI is dumb’ to ‘Wow, maybe it's unfair to deploy this in a friendly competition...’ https://fantasy.espn.com/games/tournament-challenge-bracket-2026/entry?id=5122a370-2326-11f1-8336-57ef66b45209
