Someone who is resisting as he can for those who are being targeted by the rich and orange.

Remember the Budapest Memorandum?

Ukrainians do.

They believed our promises, even if AmeriKKKans are a buncha liars.

Sony's russian subsidiary was liquidated on August 11, signaling the Japanese conglomerate's full exit from the country.

In March 2022, the corporation halted console shipments to russia, suspended PlayStation Store operations, and donated $2M to assist Ukrainians.

Sony Pictures stopped releasing films in russia, while Sony Music removed foreign catalogs from local streaming services. In 2024, the company closed its russian stores.

Kudos for doing what's right!

Dear GitHub users. Forgejo exists (and is the software behind Codeberg). Radicle exists. Sourcehut exists. You’re welcome to join! And with forgefed we also have a federated approach. We were building all of that while you were sleeping ;) Maybe you are now ready to help us build a better, more decentralised code sharing future?

@davidgerard
I’m of two minds.

I am tired of hearing FOSS recommendations that turn out to be impractical duds, for many reasons some/most of which you covered. I use windows/Mac and find those systems to work just fine for my needs.

But opposite of this, it has been an overall positive journey learning about alternatives. I wouldn’t be here on mastodon or the Fediverse if I had shut out differing views of tech, and I’m still open to switching to Linux (waiting for a RC).

With the launch of Ghost 6.0, every publication that runs on Ghost becomes part of the #fediverse. You can follow and comment on Platformer or 404 Media articles without leaving your Mastodon feed. This is the future of social media.

@georgetakei
Who's gonna stop him and how?

@ckd It would surprise me if an NRA member did.

@georgetakei

@wonka @georgetakei
But didn't they need all the guns to stop the tyranny of a federal government...?

But seriously: Other countries have seen similar developments, similar authoritarian political leaders.

So, where's the protests, where are the general strikes, where's the civil disobedience, where are the baricades?

A couple of thousand people peacefully demonstrating here or there and just holding up signs with slogans won't impress Trump and his cronies.

@ckd Yep. They obviously only meant tyrannical leftist governments.

Where all the people are? At work. Fighting to scounge together enough money to barely survive. Too many can't even afford taking the hours off needed for voting.

@georgetakei

@wonka @georgetakei
So, that's it? Just watch it happen?

There's one thing I'm clearly taking home from the last couple of months:
If ever again I'm asked how we Germans could let National Socialism, Hitler, war, and the camps happen, my answer will be:

Look at Washington, look at how fast democracy is going down the drain. Look at unmarked agents without warrants, detention camps and torture camps in other countries.

It just happenes, and nobody can be bothered to do anything about it?

@ckd Another thing seems to be that A LOT of 'Merkins don't even know what's actually going on because they don't watch any sufficiently good news.

Re "just watch it happen" - seriously organizing resistance will not happen publicly, especially not publicly on the internet.

@georgetakei

@ckd @wonka @georgetakei also, do remember that whatever needs to happen will likely not be planned or discussed on social media.

Unless this timeline is even weirder than it already seems

@jay_peper @ckd @wonka @georgetakei

Gil Scott Heron wrote a song titled "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised".

More and more I understand what he meant.

But we will know that the fascists are defeated when FOX loses its Basic Cable subsidy.

@ckd
Exactly. Nobody bother in Nazi-Germany either, till it become obvious that the war was lost, than it was oops, we weren't very nice, let's pretend we only did our job.

Or as our high school history teacher in Austria joked, we only made on critical mistake: no government-in-exile in London. Then there would have been no ambiguity that we were Germany's first victim. And not a willing and waving perpetrator.
@wonka @georgetakei

@yacc143 @ckd @wonka @georgetakei a while back whilst looking for videos about oldtimers, I found a promotional film for a KDF-Wagen (*not* the post-war Beetle/Käfer - the two are easily confused unless you look closely). I think it was from around 1940/41

What struck me was how *normal* Germany looked - it wasn't like in the movies with Nazi-banners at every street corner (I think those came a few years later),. and apart from being in black and white, the film just looked like something a modern "Auto-Youtuber" would make today.

So clearly the folk who *weren't* being nicked and hauled off to camps were living fairly normal lives until they started /losing/ the war (and as inflation got worse)

@vfrmedia @yacc143 @ckd @wonka @georgetakei

I’ve had similar reactions and I now accept that ordinary people make fascism / authoritarianism work. Sure, you have to have the cult members, but you also have to have the acceptance of ordinary people. It is this that scares me here in the US: 90m ordinary people didn’t vote! And getting those people to engage is shockingly difficult…#
#uspol

@JoeStewart @vfrmedia @ckd @wonka @georgetakei The term is "Mitläufer (follower)". Yet another of these terms that is either translated on the surface or not at at all:
Seriously, it's more complicated, in German this is also a specific legal-political term (class 4 in the denazification system). But because of that history, in modern German, it generally does not simple mean follower.

The words means more:
opportunistic follower, fellow traveler, passive supporter
It means basically the guys

that participated because it was more convenient, it was the lazy way to more success (that's why the "old party" member often mentioned their NSDAP membership number, to prove that they joined when it was not yet an opportune thing to do), the path of least resistence.

In a way it's understandable, in a totalarien systems tend to lower the glass ceiling for non-party members. (that's not unique to the fascists, the communists in the USSR block did similar).

But it makes resisting them harder.

@yacc143
Thank you.

I’ve just skimmed through the Wiki and I’m yet again disappointed in my education. I was unaware of the program in the first instance and, in the second, simply assumed that the Nazis were dealt with - uh, not so much as it turns out.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denazification

Denazification - Wikipedia

@JoeStewart It's relative.

By the standards of "dealing with the totalarian assholes afterwards" programs, it was one of the more comprehensive.

At the same time it literally showed the limits of such endeveaurs.

If a sizable part of the population starts to behave badly, there is a limit how many of them you can afterwards execute or throw in prison.

After a crisis one doesn't want to add another crisis of a dramatic shrinking population and

not having the people with the right qualifications for all the necessary jobs.

So it becomes after a certain purge & revenge phase a careful (okay not so careful you have to process millions of these bastards), consideration: "So this psychopath ate3 babies for dinner, but he didn't do them for breakfast, and he didn't bbq them alive. Pass, lesser degree of guilt, Mitläufer, you can start as district attorney Monday."

And that's as a natively German-speaking European I can only shake my head when some Americans think that there will a legal reckoning after this dark time that is descending upon the USA. Paraphrased with slight hyberbole, down to each and every jaywalking of ICE agents.

History suggests no such thing.

Actually technology will almost certainly mean that any handover of power will include complete immunity for the psychopaths. Why? Let me point again to the the last days of WWII in Europe.

The beloved Führer ordered his followers to destory Germany. He didn't want to live in Germany that lost a war and didn't think that such Germany should exist.

Lucky for everyone, most of the NSDAP were Mitläufer and not true believer. And not even these were all willing to follow that order. And with the technology of 1945 Germany, that was by far not a trivial task.

Fast forward to the White House in 2030s were a Libertarian MAGAist doesn't believe that an America with human rights is worth existing. Last time I checked US President *weep *is one of the occupations that can end human life on this planet.
@yacc143
You’re right. I recall that our Civil War required “oaths” before most Confederates were allowed to return to their pre-Civil War lives. Even following changing our Constitution multiple times to effectively grant people with Black skin the right to vote and live under equal law enforcement, large parts of our society refused. Even after generations, Blacks are routinely discriminated against. It’s exhausting

@JoeStewart And the best is, again from the perspective from the native German-speaking European, following e.g. the Harris campaign is realizing things like the one-drop-doctrine, that is still living rent-free in too many American heads.

And with a certain horror, you realize that the American people (especially the POC) are still using in many ways the racist criteria of the slaveholders back then to define their “race”.

That's like Israel using the Nuremberg race laws as the base of their citizenship law. And no, the practicality that these were the discriminated against, so let's use that definition, makes no sense. That would apply to the Nuremberg race laws too, that was the target definition of the Nazis too.

Note, that e.g. in Austria and Germany in population statistics and counts, ethnics or race are literally not asked, race is literally an anti-scientific invention of the Nazis. And the slaveholders.

We literally learn in high school that race is an esoteric anti-scientific
There is a voluntary self-identification as a minority, e.g. in Austria because of our imperial past we do have a couple of national minorities that have additional protections (as the right to their language and culture).

But that's it.

Please I don't claim that we are not racists, by any measurement we are not, but it's very different from the US version.

Just checked, yes looks that most ´(probably all) EU-27 MS do not ask for race, and only some, often voluntarily, for an ethnic background in the population counts.

🤷Yet another way how #BrExit was correct because the UK following the US racist model of census made them yet another outlier in the EU.

And yes, IE is one of the EU-27 MS that does officially (and not voluntarily) ask for an ethnical self-identification.

@yacc143
I had to look up the one drop rules. It’s gross.

And then to learn that it was made into law in the 20th century. Geezus.

“The one-drop rule was not formally codified as law until the 20th century, from 1910 in Tennessee to 1930 as one of Virginia's "racial integrity laws"…”

We are seriously messed up.

And your observation of the horror of POC adapting to it is right on.

I’m glad the EU doesnt enquire about race.

One-drop rule - Wikipedia

@JoeStewart As I mentioned, we are no less racist. I would never claim we aren't.

But as much I've always lived as an IT person with one finger or foot in the American culture, I didn't realize the enormity of US racism till the Harris situation.

I literally interviewed 2 decades ago my Californian boss to be remotely (back then via Skype audio-only), and my CTO was totally baffled that I didn't get all the small cultural clues that he was a POC.

He (the CTO) told me a typical American would have got that through the small details in the carefully race-neutral CV, even things like his name, how he talked, …

🤷

FOXNews is the default cable channel playing in the commissaries of all military bases.

According to FOX, the country is doing fine-fine-fine, except for all those pesky Democrats, who are traitors. This message plays 24-7, and the channel never changes.

Speaking of nazi Germany, I learned that the most popular movies during Hitler's regime were 'screwball comedies'.

@_chris_real They aren't called "Faux News" for no reason...

@ckd @georgetakei

@wonka @ckd @georgetakei

It's straight up propaganda. And it's part of Basic Cable, so it's subsidized—it doesn't have to worry about going broke.

As long as people are watching a television, even if they don't watch FOX, FOX still gets paid.

@georgetakei I have never not called it Lies Inc. (which, truth be told, I borrowed from Philip K. Dick).

Censored due to incompatibility with official version of the Trump adminstration.

@georgetakei Then how about telling the people at the Smithsonian to ignore his orders. So many such orders have been made, yet I haven’t heard of anyone who’s supposed to carry them out saying “Fuck you, that’s not going to happen.”
@DrewCommins @georgetakei
Because quietly ignoring things works provided you quietly it.

Trump Media saved in 2022 by Russian-American under criminal investigation

Exclusive: Trump’s social media company went public relying partly on loans from trust managed by person of interest to prosecutors

The Guardian
@Npars01 @georgetakei “There is also no indication that Trump or Trump Media had any idea about the nature of the loans beyond that they were opaque.” Is it not part of due diligence? If it’s opaque, it’s shady, & if it’s shady, it’s illegal. But that sort of constraint does not apply to the #feloninchief
@georgetakei "Truth" is is "Pravda (правда)" in English. That kind of says it all.

Big propz, George Takei, for starting to use AltText on your Fediverse posts!
And thank YOU for doing so.

@georgetakei

Here in Philadelphia, the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History “stands with Israel.”

There was a time when the Weitzman stood for #liberty. I’ve visited exhibits that were historically accurate and progressively prescient. The staff that I met were great.

The Weitzman’s posting of this Israeli flag, with its ahistorical, anti-intellectual declaration, is #antisemitic propaganda. It aims to justify the attempted annihilation of #Palestinians (who are semites) while risking the lives of Israelis as Israel continues to engage in #ethnocide.

@georgetakei

All the people in the US are sitting on their hands.

The rest of the world is watching as the fascists steal your country and the people let it happen while they complain about it on SM.

@georgetakei

I tend to be a bit more strident. The coup has already happened. We are undergoing the process of power consolidation.

The democratic erosion already happened decades ago, when what the people wanted was pushed off a cliff in favor of corporations and the wealthy.

The only interesting distinction between left and right is who ends up with decision-making power.

@georgetakei

Left-wing governments are solely identified by creating equality in decision-making.

Right wing governments confer evermore totalitarian power to the wealthy.. in short, right wing governments see the function of the state to confer powers of total control, something we generally ascribe to government, to wealth and their companies.

The right wing shrinks the state in order bloat private totalitarian dominion.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @georgetakei Almost correct. The left bloats the state until it controls everything and everybody. There is no equality, as some people then make sure that they are more equal than others. As for the right, they do shrink the state to fit their purposes and control everything. In both cases, corruption becomes rampant as it supports power for personal gain and status. Woe to the vanquished.

@JohnTP @georgetakei

I am using a substantially different definition of left and right than you are.

You were making reference to left and right as a result of historical artifact since the terms were coined in the French Revolution.

I am, however, using a definition of left and right that labels behavior, not political affiliation.

..

@JohnTP @georgetakei

The original leftists were demanding equality in decision-making, and individual liberty; the two are inseparable.

The right was advocating for the collective power of hereditary wealth end of the clergy. The right in other words was arguing for the continuance of the totalitarian hierarchy.

The short form is if the state is dictating to the people, is definitionally right wing.

A left-wing gov can only be given that name if it defends equality of decision-making.

@georgetakei History is messy with tragedy, cruelty, plagues as well as periods of great accomplishments benefitting all of society. As Tom Hanks said in A League of their Own 'The hard is what makes it great.' All aspects of history contribute to who we are today. There are great lessons to be drawn from history, if we choose to listen.

@georgetakei

I'm beginning to have doubts about that whole "land of the free and the home of the brave" thing.

@bonaventuresoft

@georgetakei the moment we gave our power to the party elders and expected so little from our so-called leaders, while watching them dismantle labor unions and a free press were signs that maybe we should change course. but it became all vote blue no matter who. the problem with that strategy is that you end up with no matter who. And now we need Paul Wellstons but we've got Hakeem Jeffries. Jeffries said at the beginning the year that there's nothing they can do, and so they do that - nothing.

we need a major course correction and we need it right now. we don't have time to play games and party politics bullshit. we need millions in the streets.
