All things move towards their end, of that you can be sure.

I will adopt your discarded genders. Any pronoun is fine.

PSA: in Australia pretty much anyone can join the various State libraries, and when you do you get access to nearly every big academic database.

You don't have to be part of a uni or school.

Mentioning it here because I've seen people worry about information collapse (me too), what might happen to Google Scholar, and the like, and no one in my uni course knew this yesterday when there was trouble having everyone access something at once through the uni library.

in other news...i made a knitting and crochet thing (well, vector symbols)!

this started because i was working on another program and got tired of trying to find/use other knitting symbols from pngs, etc.

so now what we have is a free, open-source svg set of the craft yarn council's standard knit and crochet chart symbols, with a little web customizer to recolor, resize, and download them.

102 symbols total — 81 knit, 21 crochet — plus a customizer that runs straight from github pages.

the cyc reviewed and approved the project last week.

free, no signup, no tracking — for indie pattern designers, zine makers, teachers, anyone who works with charts and doesn’t want to roll their own symbols.

contributions and suggestions welcome — open an issue or pr if there's a symbol you'd like added, a bug to fix, or an improvement you'd like to see.

future goalposts are more symbols (not just the standard cyc set) that include lace and other complex stitches.

boosts appreciated 🧶

The latter one is confounding. It's Google, for fuck's sake, search is kind of Their One Job. So why in the hell would the *search* button just disappear?

Ah, because they replaced it with a "Gemini" button.

Now, when I look at Google hardware, I can't just evaluate it on the basis of what it is when I buy it, but what it could turn into when Google's org chart next shuffles around.

There's loads of joy to be found in sucking at stuff, and being a perpetual beginner. Do random things just because they're fun. You don't have to strive for mastery (or even being particularly good) at everything.
Douglas Adams died 25 years ago today. This has made a lot of people very sad. And has been widely regarded as a very bad thing.
Krita’s Maintainer is awesome!

> But in the brave new world of Knitting Bullshit, all of that accumulated wisdom, all of the real history of knitting as labour, as resistance, as solidarity, as design intelligence, as craft, is now there simply to provide the powerful emotional currency that AI-generated podcasts and videos cynically mine for profit.

I finally got around to reading this Kate Davies post and it's ~3000 words of beautifully righteous rage.

Can the general you please stop assuming everyone uses Facebook and put your thing that you want to promote on an actual web site, with an address that at least has something to do with what that is? And no, Discord is also not the solution!

@MarcAbrahams As @davidgerard of Pivot to AI likes to say, it can't be that stupid, you must be prompting it wrong
