@Wintermute_BBS I learned to program FORTRAN on a System/34 in high school. The math department was very forward thinking and while they did have a lab of Apple 2 pluses to learn basic skills on, they brought in a 34 for “business programming” classes and taught FORTRAN, COBOL, and RPG on it. Nobody really knew how to use it other than classwork, I ended up being sysop (for lack of a better word) and kept up with backups, patches, accounts, and all. That got me a job as an FE. :)

@Wintermute_BBS Yup. It’s gonna work again. I was a Field Engineer when these were actually in use, and I worked on many way back when in the Way Back When:tm: days.

Old memory dies hard. Just popping the doors open on this one, so many details came back to mind, it was like seeing an old friend I hadn’t seen in 30 years :D

@Wintermute_BBS thank you so much! These machines are near and dear to me, and there are very few left in any condition, so even though she’s a rustbucket the electronics look very savable.

Late update, I’ve been sick. Gertie the Dinosaur, the System/34 we rescued from Nebraska, is HERE! System and printer arrived 12/5. Both definitely rustbuckets from being stored, BUT all the actual electronics look better than I had hoped! Working on the system first, stripping it down to the frame. Gonna get the frame sanded and repainted, and then clean/restore each component as it goes back in. Fun times! #retrocomputing #ibmi #system34

A service that instantly generates vaguely plausible sounding yet totally fabricated and baseless lectures in an instant with unflagging confidence in its own correctness on any topic, without concern, regard or even awareness of the level of expertise of its audience.
