@alanswx oh man this thing is a stinker inside, I absolutely love it. :)

Late update, I’ve been sick. Gertie the Dinosaur, the System/34 we rescued from Nebraska, is HERE! System and printer arrived 12/5. Both definitely rustbuckets from being stored, BUT all the actual electronics look better than I had hoped! Working on the system first, stripping it down to the frame. Gonna get the frame sanded and repainted, and then clean/restore each component as it goes back in. Fun times! #retrocomputing #ibmi #system34

Christine Lemmer-Webber (@cwebber) described ChatGPT as Mansplaining As A Service, and honestly I can’t think of a better description. A service that instantly generates vaguely plausible sounding yet totally fabricated and baseless lectures in an instant with unflagging confidence in its own correctness on any topic, without concern, regard or even awareness of the level of expertise of its audience.

I get that you mastodon old-timers feel like you’re being invaded, that there are *so many* new people and that we all just bitch and moan and we don’t get the culture and everything is changing and it’s not the place it was a month ago. I get that. But I’d gently suggest that when you got here it was probably not under duress, and you’ve had time to learn how things work and to evolve with it over the last few years (and to also get used to the things that it perhaps does not do that well,😄)
If you're not aware, NASA is posting all the interesting JWST images to Flickr, in glorious full resolution. I just downloaded a 150MB image of the Tarantula Nebula. Find that and more here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nasawebbtelescope/albums

Spoke with an engineer over the holidays who maintained that Meta is blameless for abuses on their platform. He asked me, mockingly, "should they stop scaling just because they can't moderate everything?"

The answer is YES. Scale is not just a technical issue. If you cannot control your system, stop growing it.

(btw this is also a good example of how #UX comes from more than just the buttons on the screen)

I do not like that site of birds
I do not like its awful words

I do not like what it became
I do not like its cult of shame

I do not like intrusive ads
I do not like the vapid fads

I do not like the clout it’s given
I do not like its algorithm

But I shall miss that weird bird town
I do not like it burning down

PSA: Do Not Use Services That Hate The Internet. As you look around for a new social media platform, I implore you, only use one that is a part of the World Wide Web. tl;dr avoid Hive and Post. If posts in a social media app do not have URLs that can...
