@lorenipsum this might interest you since we were just talking about it :)

Every year I put out my thoughts on the books I've read last year. This serves two purposes: it serves as a snapshot of what I thought of books at the time that I read them, and also as an easy one-stop shop list for when my family and friends inevitably ask me for recommendations.

It contains everything, fiction and non-fiction, sci-fi to litfic. I like to read wide, so there should be something for everyone.

Here is 2025's!

One of the things that the currently terrible job market has brought to the surface is that a lot of tech folks are not used to not having negotiating power. A few years ago, if you didn't love your job, you could get a new one. People had options. Less options means people feel more stuck and put up with more. I hope it turns around, but I also hope it gives techies some perspective before they tell other people "just switch jobs lol" like everyone can. #tech #software #developers

My thoughts on the current state of AI discourse, prompted by the recent comments from Github's CEO.

Here's an excerpt:

"Employers (...) don’t own your self, your sense of the future, or the way that you wish to interact with your work. They don’t own your morals or the limits of how you’re allowed to think about things. They would really like to, and they will try to issue dire warnings to make you think they do, but they don’t."

Here's my two favorite shots of my and the fam's recent hiking trip to the Gerês National Park, one of my favorite places in Portugal.

I am not Canadian, but my partner is, and Canada is one of my favorite places on this planet.

What a powerful speech today by Prime Minister Trudeau. Poignant, concise, and passionate.

Every year I put together a list of my thoughts on the books I read last year. It's not a fancy list; it's meant as something I can link to people who ask me about books or for recommendations.

I do put a fair amount of thought into it - at the very least, into thinking about how much I liked a book (or not) and why. I try my best to read wide, for fun and so most people can find something for them.

Anyway, here it is for this year:

You know, suddenly I'm quite happy Neil Gaiman has mostly abandoned Mastodon nowadays.

Harrowing read.

Reading Dracula this month, and Harker's diaries in the last section always crack me up. "My poor wife is abnormally pale, sleeping too much, getting thinner, and her breath is ever the more ragged each time I leave her alone at night - much like Lucy, who Dracula killed through blood sucking. Oh, these poor womanly affectations! Surely there can be no other explanation other than her getting so emotional it makes her sick."

Product of the times and all that, but funny. #dracula #books
