@annaecook early 50s here. Same realisation hit me very hard at age 34 and I never quite recovered.
Basically I'd been living the illusion that if I pushed real hard for a few years I'd then be able to take it reasonably easy.
Nup.
(And I'm in Australia with, yknow, Medicare for all and stuff).

Agree they're antagonistic. To a large extent the more of one the less of the other, yeah.
But capitalism thrives on artificial scarcity (e.g. real estate prices driven largely by the entirely artificial scarcity of council zoning), so it can still work as a tool for resource allocation even if we go quite hard on the degrowth?
