Nearly a quarter of century ago I wrote a book that argues the information society (or information age) as it was generally termed, was not a new form of economy but rather would just intensify aspects of capitalism (specifically around worker exploitation & the abuse of property rights) that were already pretty familiar.
My view's not changed; the so-called 'new economy' was nothing of the sort; it was just an intensification of a form of US capitalism that stokes inequality.
