Yes, you may be killed by falling human made space junk, but the odds remain small(ish) that will occur. The (almost inevitable) #KesslerSyndrome may also prevent future #space flights if all those #satellites in Low Earth Orbit start colliding, creating countless debris.

However, we *ALL* have to worry about the ‘chemical problem’ being created by SpaceX et al in the upper atmosphere. I have been banging on about this for a while and the attached article summarises the science in an easy to understand way - I have pasted the bit about the ‘chemical problem’ below because we *ALL* need to understand what the billionaires are doing to the planet while we are watching.

Debris on the ground attracts immediate attention, but atmospheric scientists are tracking a slower process with potentially larger consequences. When satellites vaporize in the mesosphere, 50 to 80 kilometers above Earth, they release clouds of vaporized metals that condense into aerosol particles. Those particles descend into the stratosphere, where Earth’s protective ozone layer resides.

Aluminum is the element of greatest concern. Upon reentry, aluminum oxidizes into aluminum oxide nanoparticles. A single 250 kilogram satellite generates roughly 30 kilograms of these particles. Unlike chlorofluorocarbons, which directly destroy ozone, aluminum oxide acts as a catalyst. One particle can facilitate chemical reactions that destroy thousands of ozone molecules over decades without being consumed.

Researchers from the University of Southern California’s Department of Astronautical Engineering documented an eightfold increase in atmospheric aluminum oxides between 2016 and 2022, directly correlating with the proliferation of satellite constellations, a finding reported in detail by CNET. In 2022 alone, reentering satellites released an estimated 41.7 metric tons of aluminum, approximately 30 percent more than the natural input from micrometeoroids.

Projections based on current deployment schedules suggest annual aluminum oxide emissions could reach 360 metric tons, a 646 percent increase over natural background levels, according to research highlighted by Popular Mechanics. Because these particles take 20 to 30 years to descend into the ozone layer, the atmospheric chemistry of today’s satellite fleet will not manifest as measurable ozone loss until the 2040s. By then, the upper atmosphere could already be saturated with catalysts.

NASA high altitude sampling flights over Alaska in 2023 detected the signature of this process. At approximately 60,000 feet, instruments found that 10 percent of stratospheric sulfuric acid particles larger than 120 nanometers contained aluminum and other metals traceable to spacecraft reentries, according to data presented at the American Astronomical Society meeting that year. The atmosphere now bears a permanent chemical marker of human activity in space.

Starlink Is Dropping From the Sky Again and Again. Scientists Warn Earth Is Already Feeling the Effects

For decades, space safety rules assumed satellite reentries would stay rare. By early 2026, with over 70,000 megaconstellation spacecraft planned, that assumption has collapsed.

🚨🦇 Bat friends of the Fedi! Help me help the sky puppies plz!

Are you in the US (and some parts of Canada) and occasionally available to drive an injured bat from the person who found it to the local rehabber who can help it? Especially if you are in central Florida where I am, please reach out to me here, or via Signal!

We constantly get calls for bat help from folx who are just a little too far away for me to get to myself, and the finder isn’t always in a position to drive themselves. Volunteer transporters often make the lifesaving difference for our bats in need. We even set up relays where the trip can be broken up if you can’t drive the full distance. And Bat World Sanctuary reimburses fuel mileage!!!

Please don’t hesitate to ask questions if you’re curious, I’m happy to go into special interest mode, LOL.

This is a no-contact situation; you pick up a bat that’s already in a box and drive it to the rehabber who contacted you. It’s super low pressure. If you’re not available they just go to the next volunteer on the list. No biggie.

Floridians: if you do sign up, please ping me directly so I know to look for you! 🖤 The registration to be a transporter in the US is a googledoc managed by Bat World Sanctuary:

Bat Transport Volunteer

Be a bat hero! Bat World Sanctuary is working to compile a running list of bat transport volunteers across the US. Wildlife rehabilitators across the country are swamped with calls this time of year. As rescuers, we are not funded by the government, nor do we receive compensation for our work. We volunteer our time and often our own money to save animals, and we rely heavily on the public to help us with transport missions and save more lives. By entering your information below, you are not actually committing to anything- but instead, letting us know that if a bat in your area needs help getting to a rescuer, we can call you to see if you are available to help. Bat transport is simple! The majority of the time, the bat will already be contained in a box, and all you need to do is meet with the finder, pick up the box, and take it to the nearest rescuer. Transport volunteers are not permitted to touch, or attempt to care for the bats, as doing so puts both the volunteer and the bat at risk. Volunteers will be contacted via phone if a bat needs help in the area. Please note that by filling out this form, your information will be available to confirmed bat rescuers across the US and you may be contacted by them. Transport volunteer requirements: -Be 18 years of age or older with a drivers license -Have access to transportation Further questions can be directed to: [email protected] Thank you for helping us save lives!

Over 40 years, we were collectively told to give tax cuts to rich people.

And we were told that if we did that, wealth would trickle down and everyone would be better off.

Over 40 years, pretty much everything got cut to fund these tax cuts.

Schools. Hospitals. Public housing. Public transport. Universities. Roads projects. Mental health services. Welfare payments.

People literally went homeless or starved, so rich people could get tax cuts.

Because the wealth would trickle down.

Eventually the eroding of public goods caused social dislocation.

So governments further cut those public goods to fund more police and prisons. To continue giving tax cuts to rich people.

But they said the wealth would trickle down.

Eventually the climate started changing because of the amount of toxic fossil fuel pollution in the atmosphere.

So governments chose to keep the tax cuts rather than fund infrastructure to reduce emissions.

(Many of those billionaires getting tax cuts made their money selling toxic fossil fuels.)

And as the oceans and atmosphere warmed, the bushfires, droughts, hurricanes, cyclones, floods, and droughts got worse.

But they said the wealth would trickle down.

Eventually people were getting pissed off at the dire state of the world.

The rich misdirected that anger at immigrants!

And First Nations!

And trans people!

And neurodivergent people!

Anyone but the billionaires who got the tax cuts.

So governments chose to keep the tax cuts. (For the rich. Everyone else got new tariff taxes.)

But they said the wealth would trickle down.

So did the wealth trickle down?

Well...

A group of billionaires saw this kinda cool tech demo.

It predicted the next pixel of an image, based on the colour patterns of every image on the internet.

It also predicted the next word in a sentence, based on an analysis of every piece of writing on the internet.

The rich decided that this clearly showed that a sentient computer was just around the corner.

The problem was these tech demos needed servers with a lot of GPUs to work.

So the rich took all the money they got from those tax cuts.

And they bought GPUs.

Millions and millions and millions and millions of GPUs.

All the tax cuts? All the underfunded schools? All the draconian welfare cuts? All the public housing shortages? The delays in funding clean energy.

In the end, it didn't trickle down.

And instead of all the public goods it could have bought...

...We'll be left with millions and millions and millions of GPUs in a landfill.
