Microplastics are present in all five of the Great Lakes, but there is no coordinated, basinwide effort to monitor and report on the status of plastic pollution. In a new report, the International Joint Commission (IJC)’s Great Lakes Science Advisory Board proposes regional coordination to systematically measure #GreatLakes #microplastics.

Fish-eating gulls and terns nesting on Michigan shoreline areas known to have long-standing industrial contamination reproduce less, have fewer chicks that survive and develop more deformities than those on nonpolluted shorelines, a decadelong field study by Calvin University researchers found.

#Winter is becoming shorter in the waters of the #GreatLakes
"A deep look at the water in the Great Lakes shows that winters are about 14 days shorter than they were in 1995.
The finding, outlined in a new paper published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, marks the first time that researchers have used subsurface temperature readings to determine how climate change may be affecting seasons in and around the largest bodies of freshwater in the U.S."

Public webinar planned for Thurs, Jan 23, to provide #LakeErie updates on work under Nutrients Annex of #GreatLakes Water Quality Agreement - led by US Environmental Protection Agency, Canada Water Agency https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYscO2hrT0sGdcSBslxPv2eSL8vmz9_cJW5#/registration
Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: GLWQA Nutrients Annex Webinar: 2024 Lake Erie Update. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

Please join us on Thursday, January 23 for a webinar that will provide updates on work under the Nutrients Annex of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. During this webinar we will summarize current conditions in Lake Erie, and you will hear about ongoing efforts to manage excess phosphorus loads that are leading to toxic and nuisance algal blooms and hypoxia. Topics that will be covered include: • Current conditions in Lake Erie, including nutrient loading and severity of blooms. • Collaborative efforts to reduce phosphorus across southwestern Ontario. • A closer look at phosphorus trends in the Maumee river and other priority tributaries. The webinar will be led by representatives from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Canada Water Agency, with additional speakers from Conservation Authorities and Heidelberg University. The webinar is open to the public.

The gate setting of the Compensating Works will be maintained at the typical winter gate setting (Gates #7 through #10 open 20 cm each) equivalent to approximately one-half gate fully open. The Board expects the total St. Marys River flow in December to be 1,900 cubic meters per second (67,100 cfs), as prescribed by Regulation Plan 2012. Actual hour-to-hour and day-to-day flows may vary depending on hydrologic conditions, as well as variations in flow from the hydropower plants.

Maximum Kootenay Lake LevelsThis fall, Kootenay Lake levels have been in compliance with the International Joint Commission (IJC) Order of Approval, which sets the maximum allowed water level. During the late summer, the IJC maximum water level was 1743.32 feet (531.36 meters) at Nelson, British Columbia, to allow farmers in the Kootenai Flats region to work their fields without an elevated water table.
