BREAKING: Signal, the #1 privacy protecting messaging app many of us rely on, is saying they will pull out of 🇨🇦 ENTIRELY if they're scoped into #BillC22 without large changes.

This should be our final alarm bell: we can have digital privacy or we can have legislation this broad and broken, not both!

Remember, at a time when regulators around the world are moving to force Apple to allow 3rd party app stores on the iPhone, Google is going in the opposite direction and will make it near impossible to have alternative app stores on Android, more here - https://keepandroidopen.org

I’m seeing a lot of infosec kids and now leftist accounts(!) defend proton on the grounds that it’s not reasonable for them to anonymize payment details

so uhhh here’s the open source tech signal uses to anonymize payments for their only paid feature: https://signal.org/blog/introducing-secure-backups/ and there’s other ways to do it too

there’s also no reason for proton to strongly link logins with message metadata. signal doesn’t, even though its login UI uses phone numbers, which are of similar sensitivity to emails.

Introducing Signal Secure Backups

In the past, if you broke or lost your phone, your Signal message history was gone. This has been a challenge for people whose most important conversations happen on Signal. Think family photos, sweet messages, important documents, or anything else you don’t want to lose forever. This explains wh...
