In case you didn’t realize this was a war.

“Globally, at least 1,910 environmentalists were killed for their efforts to protect nature against business and criminal interests between 2012 and 2022.”

How campaigners' killings hurt environmental protection in Colombia

Darkness had descended on Colombia's southern Putumayo province one February night last year when gunfire roared through the air, shattering the peaceful dusk.

Stunning photo by Cristina Mittermeie of an orca pod off the coast of British Columbia

Cristina Goettsch Mittermeier on Instagram: "In the eerie day-long twilight of the northern winter, a family of orcas peeked out of the water in perfect synchronicity to spy on our small boat. They surprised even the most seasoned whale-spotters in our group. We were there to help scientists shed light on new behaviors seen between orcas and humpbacks feeding in the frigid waters off of Lofoten. The story, according to whale scientists, who until then had never jumped in the water with orcas, was that the orcas were collaborating with humpback whales in what is known as “carousel feeding”. Once we got in the water, however, we witnessed a very different story. Orcas spend their entire lives in close-knit families. They travel, hunt, sleep and play together. They have the most amazing communication skills and they were using this coordinating behavior to herd large schools of herring.  Clever humpbacks were capitalizing on this effort by waiting for the orcas to organize the fish and then stealing the ball of fish, leaving the orcas empty-handed…or is it empty-finned? For the next 48 hours, this image will be available as a limited edition NFT. Showcase your love and support of these magnificent creatures and click the link in my bio to learn more."

Three of us met today for our #seashepherd #beachclean at Potato Garth, Sunderland.

It's small and not often used by the public, but is a haven for wildlife. Seals, sea otters and swans are seen down here.

We picked up 7-8 bin liners of numerous vapes, pieces of rope, plastic bags and broken glass, as well as polystyrene bits that get washed up there, weathering into ever smaller sizes and the risk of ingestion by marine wildlife.

one of the more poignant beach clean finds
#GrandNational weekend. Three horses dead (so far) for 'entertainment' and to feed a bent, druggy industry. See the BBC and Guardian can't even be arsed to give it a story, which is not much of a surprise given that most of their coverage is fellating the industry with gusto.
@simon Three now. 😡
