Joseph Hamwee was born in Syria in 1869 and came to Manchester in 1887. He also lived on Cheetham Hill Road and from 1913-1918, was president of the synagogue that is now home to the Manchester Jewish Museum.

I wonder what it must have been like, being born and raised Jewish in Syria under the Ottoman Empire and then moving to the industrial heart of the British Empire? I'm sure there were lots of stories told.

Over one hundred of years of imperial history made the headlines back in Feb, after it emerged an Iraqi Jewish family home in Baghdad, was being occupied (rent free) by the French Government.

It's sometimes easy to forget, that after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the British and French redrew the borders of the Middle East region under the notorious 1916 Sykes-Picot agreement.

How a Jewish family’s Baghdad home became France’s rent-free embassy

A Paris court on Monday dismissed a lawsuit brought by the descendants of an Iraqi Jewish family seeking compensation for a Baghdad villa occupied rent-free by France's diplomatic representation for decades. Forced to flee Iraq amid rising anti-Semitism in the late 1940s, the family said it will appeal the ruling.

Katie Amin moved from Jerusalem to the USA with her family at the age of 13 and her first year in America was also her first year in high school.

So Katie became a firefighter and was one of a few female Muslim, Arab-American firefighters in the country.

While this talk was filmed back in 2019, Katie Amin's message remains the same. As she explained, sometimes words have no equivalence.

Back in 2019, Jessica Meir and Christina Koch made history by conducting the first ever all-female spacewalk on the International Space Station. But did you know, Jessica Meir's father was born in Baghdad?

Less than a year after the first all-female space walk, Jessica Meir sent this broadcast from the International Space Station to children across Baghdad and to those being supported by the Iraqi Children Foundation ❤️

What does it mean to go first? Dearborn in Michigan is home to one of the largest Middle Eastern communities in the USA. In 2022, Dearborn also appointed its first Arab American Muslim police chief.

But looking back to 2016, Amal Chammout became the first uniformed officer of the Dearborn Police Department to wear a hijab while out on patrol. This attracted the attention of Al-Jazeera.

According to some reports, there are over 100,000 Yemenis living in the United States and they are mostly located in New York, Michigan and in Northern California.

As CBS highlighted 9 years ago, of 36,000 NYPD officers, there were around 1,000 officers who identified as Muslim and Captain Jamiel Altaheri was one of them.

But what happens when worlds collide and global affairs impact on local lives?

On Monday, the BBC reported that in London, a Moroccan Jewish celebration called a Mimouna was held. It's a uniquely Moroccan Jewish celebration marking the end of Passover.

Moroccan Jews have a long history and Stephanie Laurent decided to organise this celebration in London, where "conversations drift between Moroccan Arabic, English and French".
