What else did I miss? ๐Ÿค”
8๏ธโƒฃ This one's unique to songwriting, but still: Lyrics matter. Figurative language matters. Let's hear some syllables, cadences, and wordplay. ๐Ÿ”ฅโœ๏ธ

7๏ธโƒฃ Redundancies in English:
"Reply back"
"Respond back"
"Rise up"

Responding to someone implies the "back" aspect. There's no other way to respond or reply, other than "back."

Similarly, "to rise" implies "up." You can't "rise" down. So the "up" is unnecessary.

6๏ธโƒฃ The word "overcomplicate" is overused. I know, I knowโ€”this is a quirky one. But hear me out: Most of the time, you probably want to say, "Don't complicate it."

The word "overcomplicate" itself is a hyperbole of "complicate." If you use the word "overcomplicate" when it should've been "complicate," you've essentially ๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ what you were saying. ๐Ÿ˜…

Think of it this way: Are the instructions hard to follow? Then they're complicated. Are they overcomplicated? Then it's a puzzle.

5๏ธโƒฃ Human-centric copy isn't reserved for quirky startups and "fun" brands. It also exists in financial services and other highly-regulated industries. Is it tougher to write? Sure. But it's possible. B2B marketing is already sort of a snooze fest.

Sounding human has always been ROI+ in my experience.

4๏ธโƒฃ Despite the recent rise (and hatred) of em dashes due to LLMs, I still think it's underutilized. It's powerful, versatile, and you should continue to use it. After all, what happens when LLMs stop using it?

Alsoโ€”where do you think LLMs got em dashes from? What data were they trained with? ๐Ÿ˜ถ

What are some writing hot takes? ๐Ÿฅต

Here are a few of mine (in no particular order).

1๏ธโƒฃ Learn the rules so that you know whenโ€”and howโ€”to break them.

2๏ธโƒฃ "Irregardless" should not be a word.

3๏ธโƒฃ The Oxford comma is critical. Use it.

"Come meet Jane, a clown and a thief" states that Jane is a clown and a thief.

By contrast, "Come meet Jane, a clown, and a thief" indicates 3 different characters.

YouTube cracking down on AI slop = opportunity for authentic creators

I don't know who needs to hear this, but writing things like "Don't hallucinate" or "Write clean code" don't automatically make LLMs ("AI") produce accurateโ€”or optimalโ€”results.

P.S. I wrote with em dashes long before LLMs and will continue to do so.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk. ๐Ÿซก
