#so345 I know that that main source to help change these systemic issues is though the education of the youth! However, i wonder how that would look and play out. For instance, I worked for college mentors on campus which brought students from low income families to butler. They got to see where “hard work” gets you however, i wonder if there version of hard work would get them in this school system!
My question to this chapter is if you are damned if you do and damned if you dont then what do you do? #so345
#so345 it was sad to see that the adults with in these kids life didnt care to look at their individual aspirations. This just shows how no one is helping these kids because if kids that are trying their best to stay out of “trouble” fall victim to punishment then theirs no hope for the children who are quote on quote delinquent
When thinking on masculinity challenges I realized that since the boys feel like they dont meet many societal expectations, they can feel expected in some way by being hyper aggressive in masculinity! #so345
When the officer stated to spider that if he wanted to be a real man he should get a job, I couldn’t help but think of the Chapter 5 where Ronny tried to do this but was treated less then and turned away. I just don’t understand why there solution is to get a job when the system does not try and help in any way. #so345
#so345 when looking on chapter 6, there are many thoughts sense the chapter spoke on how the streets and police treatment made the kids develop a sense of manhood through gendered practices. My question would have to be, on the flip side what does this mean in the concept of womenhood fir the young girls leaving in the same area exprencing the same discrimination.
#so345 when doing the reading on Ronnys interview, it made me extremely sad and angry what was the out come even after he put in so much effort and followed all the instructions that were give!! It makes me wonder what other ways black men and women are discriminated against with out anyone noticing. It also makes me wonder did the lady understand that her actions were racist or just acting implicitly!
#so345 when looking at chapter 5, the idea of misrecognition was very appealing to me because it really represented that there is efforts to confrom to the general societies demands but they have no idea what that looks like without a helping hand.I had a similar experience to the one in the book when I was getting ready for a job interview a few years ago and truly thought jeans were okay to wear because they have been normalized in the media as formal where if they aren’t ripped.
I think that on page 78 when the police are questioning the mother and just assume that her son was involved in gang thats why he was stabbed showed how no matter what they do not view them as a victim! They continue to point a finger at them and question what they did to deserve this treatment. If I were the mom I would never want to involve myself with the police again! #so345
When reading chapter 4 i found Garlands analysis of punishment to be very insightful! The quote “punishment does not just restrain or discipline society punishment helps create”. This made me see punishment as a form of almost ceremonial practice that we do as society to show a likeness #so345
