Courage is contagious. So is fear. All public figures right now - elected or otherwise - have a choice about which contagion we are going to spread. If we put democracy first, we choose the former. If we put our personal self-interest first, we choose the latter. /fin

"To claim the authority to remand any #American... to a distant prison beyond the reach of any legal remedy is to violate centuries of Anglo-American legal tradition & shatter the very foundations of constitutional government in the #UnitedStates. It is to reduce the citizens of a republic to the subjects of a king. It is, in the language of the American revolutionaries, to enslave the people to a singular, arbitrary will"

Opinion | America, This Is an Old and Brutal Tyranny

Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia should not be in prison. Especially not in El Salvador.

It's much easier to use apps that support end-to-end encryption than it used to be, but it's still good to know how it works. https://ssd.eff.org/module/deep-dive-end-end-encryption-how-do-public-key-encryption-systems-work
A Deep Dive on End-to-End Encryption: How Do Public Key Encryption Systems Work?

If you havenโ€™t yet, we recommend reading a few guides before this one, to help cement some of the concepts discussed here: What Should I Know About Encryption?, Key Concepts of Encryption, and Key Verification. If used correctly, end-to-end encryption can help protect the contents of your messages, text, and...

I see it. I have lived it. 83 years ago, the U.S. government turned upon a group of its own citizens and residents and sent them to internment camps without due process. I was there among them. American fascism is back. It is here. It is now.
Volodymyr Zelensky continues to do daily broadcasts to his country about the war, as he has been doing for a Very Long Time, because he gets it.
Meanwhile Democrats in the U.S. still haven't figured out the most basic facts that we are also in a war and they also need to be doing daily primetime press conferences.
The former comedian gets it; the career politicians don't.
It's incredibly unbelievable how much Democratic leadership has failed to live up to this moment.

A brief guide for Americans

by #TimothySnyder

Yesterday the president defied a #SCOTUS ruling to return a man who was mistakenly sent to a gulag in another country, celebrated the suffering of this innocent person, & spoke of sending Americans to foreign #ConcentrationCamps.

This is the beginning of an American policy of state terror, & it has to be identified as such to be stopped.

A brief guide for Americans

Thinking about...

"If citizens endorse the idea that people named by authorities as "criminals" or "terrorists" have no right to due process, then they are accepting that they themselves have no right to due process. It is due process, and due process alone, that allows you to demonstrate that you are a citizen. Without it, the masked men in the black vans can simply claim that you are a foreign terrorist and disappear you."

State Terror

A brief guide for Americans

Thinking about...

"Each act, each occasion, is worse than the last, but only a little worse. You wait for the next and the next. You wait for one great shocking occasion, thinking that others, when such a shock comes, will join with you in resisting somehow. You donโ€™t want to act, or even talk, alone; you donโ€™t want to โ€˜go out of your way to make trouble.โ€™ Why not?โ€”Well, you are not in the habit of doing it. And it is not just fear, fear of standing alone, that restrains you; it is also genuine uncertainty."

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.
