"High-throughput phenomics of global ant biodiversity", Katzke et al. 2026
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41592-026-03005-0

"within the open science initiative ‘Antscan’, we applied high-throughput synchrotron X-ray microtomography to capture phenotypes across a diverse and ecologically dominant insect group: ants. At https://www.antscan.info, we provide 2,193 whole-body three-dimensional ant datasets from 212 genera and 792 species to broadly cover the ant phylogeny with a global scope, also pairing phenomic data with genome sequencing projects."

High-throughput phenomics of global ant biodiversity - Nature Methods

Antscan is a publicly accessible database of synchrotron X-ray CT images of ants. The database covers almost 800 species from more than 200 genera and is coordinated with genome sequencing projects that will enable integrative analyses.

Read this response from the #OpenStreetMap Foundation about an attempt to get a format from a few megacorps to be a global internet standard.

The world can be better than this. We don't have to just accept what the megacorps say. We don't have to just do what makes them money. We can make a map, and record, everyone in the world if they want. We can include everyone.

A new world can be born

I've penned a short blog post on some revelations the Swiss #OpenStreetMap community has had over the last couple of weeks. If you so want a cautionary tale https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/SimonPoole/diary/408313
Our (the Swiss OSM communities) TIGER moment

OpenStreetMap old timers know about the infamous 2009 TIGER import of road data in the US that continues giving to this day. Our story has none of the, maybe deliberate, shenanigans (see the TIGER improvement project) that went on back then in the US, but there are clearly some similarities in the lessons that should be learnt.

One of my highlights of yesterday's Mapping USA online conference was osm.kids, a map using #OpenStreetMap that's made for #children! If you're zoomed in, it highlights things like playgrounds, fire stations, schools and ice cream shops.

When you zoom out, you see city and country names and flags so you can learn all about those!

It is so creative and I love it. osm.kids demonstrates so well that you can make maps with OSM that you cannot make with any other map tools out there.

It's truly the most mindless thing and symptomatic for the "AI" bullshitters: OSM allows you to just download all the data in nice and simple snapshots. Instead, scrapers use thousands of residential IP addresses to query the service at zero benefit over the data dumps.

The people creating these systems understand as little as the "AI" they create.
