I’ve hung up my pro agronomy boots, but they come in handy when I cycle to the fruit, veg and flower allotment here in rural East Devon, U. K. Most things botanical 🍃 and invertebrate 🐛will catch my attention🌻. I wear different boots at a workshop by the river where I make all sorts of stuff.
@pthane Very many thanks Phil. What an interesting eclectic mix of posts in your feed! A few allotment construction pictures would be a fine addition of course 😉
@rlcw Hi Becca . Thanks for your experience and I’m pleased it is working so well. Like you I’ve had some success 👏with a similar method on a much smaller scale than you. If the source crop had grass weeds (e.g., brome, ryegrass, couch, wild oats), their seeds can absolutely end up in the straw. Convulvulus is very common, too. 😟On the one year’s seed , ten years weed principle, I’d still remain cautious about the source of straw 😅 Keep up the good work
@rlcw Thanks Becca . Brilliant suggestion! I’ve tried various techniques over the years and the straw method can be good other than the possibility of importing a lot of perennial grass weed seed with the straw. The plot I’ve inherited has two types of thick perennial grass but also a massive infestation of bindweed. I’ll post on how successful I am with control. Good luck with your project - I look forward on checking your progress .
New beginnings at the allotment! 🌱
After a couple of years unloved by the previous tenant, this 8m x 12m plot has started its transformation. I’ve been battling perennial grass and broad-leaved weeds since October but I’m winning. 👏
Here’s the blank canvas on a damp South West England day 🌧️
I hope to post through 2026 as this overgrown patch becomes productive ground again. Wish me luck !

A lovely sight in the bright sunshine. I used the 1959’s ‘looking at butterflies’ book to identify the Small Copper, but L. Hugh fixed me with his descriptions os sub- species 🤔Note to self: Check the underside of the wings 👏
I thought I had a decent handle on fungi ( or is it spider? ) ,this one has left me wanting. Close to a crab apple here in East Devon. Any ideas?
The second newly transplanted Swiss Chard showed some familiar symptoms. A little digging revealed the culprit; wireworms can be prolific after established grass . #allotment, #vegetables #growyourown #insect #pests
This yellow zucchini / courgette variety has sported a half yellow half green fruit. I’ve seen this a few times but never understood the plant physiology. Nice, tho’ #zucchini #courgette #plantphysiology #allotment #vegetables #growyourown
Late evening at the allotments. Cool after a hot afternoon. The moon is up, the rooks are heading for their roost and seed sowing is finished for the day. #allotment #flowers
