What if Big Tech embraced the user-owned web — not to empower users, but to quietly rebuild control under the banner of openness? The last article of my mini series reveals the playbook of re-centralization and the safeguards Europe must deploy now.

How a BigTech Could Hijack a Decentralized Web - and How Europe Can Prevent It

This document is Part 1 of the User-Owned Web series. Following the conceptual introduction (“Two Roads to the User-Owned Web”), it explores how control, value, and innovation shift when users—not platforms—own their data. Solid, ActivityPub, and similar user-owned web architectures serve as examples of this broader paradigm.

Power Dynamics of the User-Owned Data Economy

The shift toward a user-owned data economy is transforming the foundations of digital power. When users control their data instead of platforms, technology, markets, and regulation begin to realign.

With the AI-bubble looking close to bursting, here I present a pre-mortem, in which I state that much of AI is simultaneously mega-impressive and still mostly useless. The collapse of the bubble does not mean the technology will go away, however. Also, there are extremely useful AI applications already that we should not lose sight of once we are post-collapse. Plus some thoughts on 'intelligence' & evolution:

The AI-collapse pre-mortem - Bert Hubert's writings

An essential part of being able to say ‘I told you so’ is in fact having told you so. Here goes. In April 2023, I wrote an article titled AI: Guaranteed to disrupt our economies. In this piece I also announced I was going to make a fool of myself by making some AI predictions. I have singularly failed to do so. In retrospect this was all spot on, except for perhaps missing the sheer magnitude of the madness that was about to ensue.

Bert Hubert's writings

Me in October 2024: "Hmmm #Linux seems interesting, maybe I'll start learning it on a Raspberry Pi... and if I'm lucky enough in 5-10 years I can host my own Fediverse instance."

Me in October 2025: "No we can't fly back to Paris on October 25th. IT'S LINUX DAY in Italy! I need to attend events." I'm also self-hosting my own GoToSocial, Pixelfed, PeerTube and NextCloud (thanks to #YunoHost). And no I'm not bragging, I'm sharing my new addiction. Send help please 😅🤣

🎉 Big news for the PeerTube Co-op Initiative!

This Sunday marks the first official meeting of the PeerTube Co-op BC Steering Committee—the very first step toward making a PeerTube server that’s democratically run and community-owned.

Every member of the Steering Committee is a volunteer, donating their time, expertise, and energy to help build an alternative to corporate video hosting—one grounded in co-operative values, transparency, and ownership.

Together, we’ll be defining the vision, mission, and structure that will guide how this co-op operates—from membership to governance to long-term sustainability.

It’s happening—the foundation for a truly democratic, community-run PeerTube network is being built right now.

The web we know is efficient—but fragile. Power and innovation have drifted away from users and into platforms.

A new generation of open architectures - ActivityPub, Solid, and beyond - offers a way to take control back.

My latest article, “Roads to the User-Owned Web,” launches a 3-part series on how these models could reshape digital autonomy in Europe.

Roads to the User-Owned Web

The web was born as a universal space for sharing documents, but it evolved into a landscape dominated by centralized platforms. Most online interactions today depend on intermediaries that own and…

In this age of technofeudalism every writer who covers technology - especially resistance to Big Tech - should disclose their tech stack. Here's mine

Let's normalize sharing the tech we use - and the platforms we purposefully avoid. I'm sharing my tech stack in this post to let you judge for yourselves if I'm "walking the talk" when I discuss resistance to Big Tech.

R4: "Transparency & Trust"

Amidst deep fakes, unmonitored copyright infringements + non-disclosure of sources, more transparency helps avoid mistrust & bias. Open web data are a counter-concept to the current narrow insights into the preprocessing aspects of digital information retrieval. Our economies & societies rely on verifiable information. Transparent curation + provision of information should be given.

It’s been a month since I began my transition from big tech systems – marked by this banner on my Facebook account: “I’m more and more elsewhere…”

Now building on Mastodon, Threema, Pixelfed etc. See my new blog & initiative for context: https://techtonicshift.vivaldi.net

Any advice for me and my fellow followers from Facebook on how to effectively rebuild initial networks here (or across the Fediverse) is very welcome!
